MOTOR ACCIDENTS
Position in New Zealand
NO COMPLETE RECORDS
Regarding statements and correspondence which have appeared in the Press recently regarding motor accidents, the Wellington Automobile Club states that education of the public in the matter of safety on the roads has always been a feature of the activities of automobile associations.
One respect iu which New Zealand is lacking, states an official of the club, is in the absence of complete records of'accidents in which motor . vehicles are involved. The only statistics kept are in relation to fatal accidents which, in number, form a very small percentage of the total accidents. The time is long overdue for the compilation of complete and simple, statistics of all accidents. It is understood that all insurance companies are prepared to supply details which would' enable the authorities to compile an accurate analysis of the causes of all accidents. Such an analysis is invaluable for use in connection with accident prevention propaganda, aud its preparation could be one of the duties of the transport department.
