EKETAHUNA COURT Move for Reinstatement Eketahuna, July 28... A determined move is being made for the reinstatement of the Eketahuna Magistrate’s Court, v Speaking at a meeting of local justices of the peace, the Mayor, Mr. W. Simpson, suggested that the Wellington Justices’ Association could possibly do something to back up the case that had •Been put to the Minister. A graver injustive was being inflicted on the town and district by the closing of the court. It was a very unfortunate matter for litigants, particularly in unimportant cases sush as debt claims and breaches of bylaws, where'a whole day and travelling expenses were now wasted. There was no economy affected in closing the court, and the justices were fully justified in voicing their dissent. The district had not been treated at all fairly. “They claim to have saved £32 by closing the court, but on the other hand it is costing litigants £l3O more in the year,’ said Mr. A. H. Herbert. It was decided to seek the support of the Wellington Justices’ Association in furthering the claims already made. A further suggestion that all the local bodies, the Farmers’ Union and the Chamber of Commerce be approached was also agreed to, JERSEY BREEDERS MEET Horowhenua Club ’ Levin, July 28. A DIFFICULT PROBLEM Unemployed Maoris A QUESTION OF MARRIAGE Wanganui, July 28. Problems in connection with unemployed Maoris puzzled the Wanganui Central Unemployment Committee today. The most vexed question was when is a married Maori married? It was stated that a Maori to benefit as a married man under the unemployment schemes had to be legally married according to pakeha law, and one member of the committee was of the opinion that 75 per cent, of those applying for relief as married men were ineligible for assistance. Numbers were married according to tribal law, which appeared to be quite legal. On the other hand, it was pointed out that if a Maori wished to formally legalise the procedure he could tell a minister that he was married and fill in a form of declaration.

Another , member suggested that it would be more humanitarian if relief were granted to married Maoris, whether they were married according to pakeha or Maori custom, but Mr. E. W. F. Gohns said that single Maoris, when told that no work was available for them, had turned up next day and said that they were married. The Mayor, Mr. N. G. Armstrong, then said that it was obviously to the benefit of Maoris to marry under legal pakeha standards. NEW MOTOR CAMP Masterton Site Masterton, July 28. WANGANUI WORKLESS Help for Short-time Men COMMITTEE’S NEW SCHEME Dominion Special Service. Wanganui, July 28. Food and firing distributed by the Wanganui Central Relief Committee will be paid for in cash in future, and proceeds from the sale of goods will be devoted to a plan for giving short-time men more work. Extraordinary eases will be dealt with differently as the committee sees fit. It was stated at a meeting of the committee to-day that a certain quantity of food and meat had been donated to the depot on condition that it would be distributed free of charge to unemployed. The scheme was proposed by the Mayor, Mr. N. G. Armstrong, who has been concerned over the uneven distribution of work among certain classes of unemployed. He thought that the scheme would rectify the position, although certain elasticity in administration would be necessary. Some members of the’Unemployment Committee objected to the scheme on the grounds that it would be a hardship for an unemployed man to pay anything for food, but the motion proposing the scheme was carried. A. & P. MATTERS

Boxing Championships TOPICS FROM WANGANUI Dominion Special Service, . Wanganui, July 28. When it was suggested at the annual meeting of the Wanganui A. and P. Association yesterday that the association’s grounds at Wanganui East should be placed at the disposal of the city for gardens for unemployed to grow vegetables, the president, Mr. R. Farley, said that such a scheme was already under consideration. Showgrounds Useless. The Wanganui East grounds of the A. and P. Association were stated to be useless as showgrounds by Mr. J. McL. Blair at a meeting of the association yesterday. “Every day the prospects of using tliem grows more remote,” he said, “and a policy should be shaped with regard x to their disposal, keeping in view the possibility of Spriggens Park being used as a central amusement pork in co-operation With the Rugby Union,” Wanganui Boxing Championships. It was decided at a meeting of the executive of the Wanganui Boxing Association last night that the championships be held on August 25 if all arrangements could be successfully made. It was decided that any surplus funds from the tournament should be devoted to the mayor’s relief fund, and in order to raise as much money as possible certificates would be issued to winning boxers instead of medals or cups. The championships will probably be held, in the Opera House, and already applications have been received from all over the district, for nomination of boxers eager for championship honours.

Remanded on Receiving Charge. Arrested yesterday afternoon -on a charge of having received 1000 cigarettes which he had known to have been stolen, Benjamin Smith, labourer, aged 29, was remanded until August 1 when he appeared before justices in the Police Court last evening.

New Football Ground. A maximum of £l5O was set aside for expenditure on a new football ground near the Technical College Hostel at a meeting of the Technical College Board of .Governors last night. It was agreed that it was a favourable time for the construction of a ground, as the work would employ a number of men at a minimum cost to the board.

Stock Prices Firm. There was a total clearance in all sections at good prices at Freeman R. Jackson’s weekly stock sale in Wanganui yesterday. The sheep section comprised mainly breeding ewes and fat sheep, with a few odd lots of store sheep. There was a light yarding of cattle, which sold at late rates. There was a good demand for all classes of store pigs. Bidding in all sections was free, and recent prices were well maintained,

Soccer Teams. The selector for the lower grades of the Wanganui Football Association has announced the primary and secondary schools’ teams and the'grade representatives. The third grade representatives will play in Christchurch at the beginning of September and the fourth grade team will play in Wellington on about the same date.

Small Attendance at Meeting. The .attendance at the annual meeting" of the Wanganui Jockey Club last night was the smallest for ten years.

High Admission Charges. < It was pointed out at a meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club last night that gate receipts had dwindled by 50 per cent, on previous years’ takings. Several members were- of the opinion that this was due to the high charges for admission. Other members were of the opinion that the admission charges had little to do with the falling off in revenue. Before the last race meeting held by the Wanganui club there was much public comment on the failure to reduce admission charges in common with other sporting bodies, "and many predicted that this policy would in the end ruin the local club.

Racing Club Officials. At the annual meeting of the Wanganui Jbckey Club last night the following officials were elected to office: Patron, Mr. A- Cameron; president, Mr. E. A. Campbell; vice-president, Mr. C. G. Russell; honorary timekeeper, Mr. T. Currie; honorary treasurer, Mr. H. G. Lewis; honorary surgeons. Drs. H. Christie, J. W. Anderson, D. Wilson, H. D. Tolley, one of the school’s founders. The principal, Mr. H J. Wild, presided.. Visiting old pupils were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Wild at tea last night. A SMALL PROFIT Pahiatua Racing Club Pahiatua, July 28. “From a financial point of view the year just closed has been’’ a very trying one,” states the report presented at the annual meeting of the Pahiatua Racing Club. In common with most clubs in the Dominion, the club suffered a serious fall in the amount of money put through tire totalisator, and consequently the amount available* for stakes and the . general purposes of the club. Tins fall was, to same extent, anticipated by the stewards, with the result that the club was able to hold its annual meeting and make a small profit. “Thanks to the work of the stewards and generous friends, the expenditure on the course was cut down considerably, and the club’s best thanks are given to those who helped so generously. But the burden of taxation presses heavily, and the position demands the greatest care. and attention from members if the club is to carry on. The buildings and racing track are in excellent order.” The president, Mr. 11. McSherry, observed that the balance-sheet showed a credit of £ll4/0/5. This was satisfactory as far as it went, but the club had very considerable permanent liabilities, ana the amount in hand would not be sufficient to carry them over till the next meeting, and they might need some assistance from supporters of racing in the district. The stakes last year were reduced from £lB3O to £lllO, a cut of £7OO. Salaries came down from £225/10/4 to £lS> 12/1 last year. The election of officers resulted as follows :—President, Mr. 11. Me ilierrv; vice-presidents, Messrs S. V. Rodney, q. Thilloch, D. Kelly; stewards, Messrs, c. Connell, G. D. H. Smith, C. Johnskie, R. JI Smith, W. McDowell, F. Moore, C. Hoggins, F. Britland, E. L. Harvey, S. T. Tinney, P Lloyd; treasurer, Mr. H. McSlierry; honorary surgeons, Drs. 11. I. Dawson and 11. Paterson; auditor, Mr. R. C. Austin; clerk of course, Mr. A. Judd.
