The Government steamer Matai, which has been visiting northern lighthouses, left Onehunga yesterday afternoon for the Brothers’ light and Wellington. She is due here on Saturday morning. NORFOLK AT SOUTHAMPTON. Cabled 'advice has been received by the New Zealand Shipping Company that the Norfolk reached Southampton on Wednesday. She left Wellington on June 15 for Southampton and London, via Cape Horn, Montevideo and Dakar. TEES RESUMING. The steamer Tees, which has been laid up at Lyttelton, is to recommission on Monday, and will leave there next Tuesday for the Chatham Islands to load for Lyttelton. WAIPAHI LEAVES SUVA. Cabled advice has been received that the Union Company's Waipahi left Suva yesterday morning with 7143 cases of bananas for Auckland, where she is due next Tuesday. THE TISNAREN. Spedding, Ltd., have received advice that the Swedish motor-ship Tisnaren, on route from Cape Town via Fremantle, Adelaide and Melbourne, is now due at' Wellington on August 8. She has South African cargo for discharge at Wellington and Auckland. TANKER BISCA. Spedding, Ltd., have received advice that the motor-tanker Bisca left San Pedro on July 22 for Auckland, Wellington and Australia. She has'bulk motorspirit for the British International Oil Company, and is due at Auckland on August 16, and here on August 20. H.M.S. DUNEDIN REPORTfJ. H.M.S. Dunedin has reported by wireless that she will reach Auckland at eleven o’clock next Monday morning. The cruiser is returning to New Zealand after a stay of over a year in England undergoing an extensive'overhaul and refitting. SUGAR FROM JAVA. Spedding, Ltd., have received advice that the Bank Line motor-ship Levenibank is due at Auckland on August 9 with a full cargo of raw sugar from Java. TONGARIRO COMPLETING. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s Tongariro left Port Chalmers yesterday morning for Bluff, to complete her homeward loading. She is scheduled to clear Bluff finally next Monday for. Southampton and London, via Cape Horn and Dakar.

GABRIELLA IN PORT. From Newcastle, via Auckland, the Union Company’s Gabriella arrived at Wellington last night, and berthed at the .Pipitea Wharf. She will shift this morning to Aotea Quay, and later to the Miramar Wharf. On completion of discharge the Gabriella will return to Newcastle. and possibly Sydney, to load for Wanganui. KARETU AT NEWCASTLE. Cabled advice has been received by the Union Company that the Karetu, from Auckland, reached Newcastle yesterday morning. She i» to clear Sydney to-day for Fiji, Tonga, and Auckland, where she is due on August 16. RANGITIKI COMPLETING. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s motor-liner Rangitiki arrived at Auckland yesterday afternoon from Tokomaru Bay, to complete her homeward loading. She is scheduled 'to clear the northern port finally at daybreak on August 5 for London, via the Panama Canal. PORT HUNTER DELAYED. The C. and D. Line advises that the Port Hunter has been delayed at Picton by rain and is now due at Wellington on Sunday to continue her Homeward loading. She is to leave here again next Monday for Auckland to fill up and is scheduled to clear that port finally on August 6 for London via Cape Horn, Montevideo and Dakar.

Owing to the exceptionally large amount of cargo loaded at Auckland by the Union Company’s liner Niagara, the .vessel did not leave for Vancouver until 6 p.m. on Tuesday, seven hours later than her usual time of sailing. . The bulk of the cargo comprised 57,000 cases of Australian dried fruit which were brought from Melbourne to Auckland on July 10 by the Union Company’s steamer Kiwitea. The fruit is for discharge at Vancouver. A further consignment of dried fruit which was taken from Australia to Fiji by one of the Union Company’s trans-Paci-fic steamers will be transhipped to the Niagara at Suva. . Other cargo loaded at Auckland by the Niagara included nearly 900' boxes of butter. A quantity is for Honolulu and the remainder will be transhipped at that port for Shanghai.. The Niagara also took a small quantity of frozen meat for Honolulu and a considerable amount of general cargo for island ports and Canada.

AUSTRALIAN COASTAL TANKER. According to advices received from London, tenders have been invited by the Standard-Vacuum Transportation Company for the construction of a singlescrew oil tanker to be employed in the Australian coastal service. The vessel dimensions are 340 ft. 3m. by 48ft. y 27ft. 6in, with a displacement of 8087 tons and a deadweight capacity of 5400 tons on 22ft. 10m. draught. She is to have a block co-efficient of .759, and will be constructed on the Isherwood bracketless system. With regard to the engines —two alternatives are proposed: (1) Diesels of the Burmeister and Wain, Werkspoor or Doxflord type, of 1800 b.h.p, or (2) double reduction geared turbines with two water-tube boilers, the latter athwartship and on raised seats. The seam machinery is to be of 2000 s.h.p. The tenders were to be in by June 13. ■ Recently the Italian tanker Vincas was reported Sold to Australian buyers for the Australian coastal trade.

MANCHESTER SHIP CANAL. The approximate traffic receipts of the Manchester Ship Canal for May amounted to £97 094. in comparison with £91,620 for the’ corresponding period of last year. The receipts for the first five months of this year totalled £465,002, an increase of £2744 over the corresponding period of UJ3I.
