CABLE-LAYING SHIP

Recorder in Wellington OPERATIONS IN TASMAN To replenish her coal bunkers and „ Vni-l n stores, the cable steamer Recorder arrived at Wellington late vesterday afternoon from the Tasman Sef and berthed at the Aotea Quay breastwork. Since she last visited Wellington the Recorder has comp eted the transfer of the Wellington-Sydney No. 2 cable to Auckland. . The Recorder has not yet carried out repairs to two small faults in the new cable, one ou each side of the cut, as the weather lu the Tasman has been too heavy for cable repair work. She is to leave here again about next Tuesday to repair these two faults, and will then proceed to Norfolk Island. Tliere are four cables to and from Norfolk Island, and owing to patches of shell on the sea .bottom ou both sides of the Island these cables periodically chafe through. The Recorder will on iier arrival at Norfolk Island pick up the part of each cable where it passes over the shell beds, and will replace it with specially prepared cable reinforced to withstand the chafing of the shell.
