LIFE-SAVING SOCIETY

Wellington Head Centre SUCCESSFUL PAST YEAR “The year has been a most successful one,” states the annual report of the Wellington Head Centre of the Royal Life Saving Society which will be presented at the annual meeting to be held later in the month. The report deals with only ten months’ work, as the end of the head centre’s year has been transferred from July to May to bring it into conformity with those of the other centres. The number of awards gained by the head centre during the period was 1574, as against 533 for last year. So far as can be ascertained, this is a Dominion record for any head centre. Wellington’s •previous record was 852. The competition for the Longuet Memorial Shield is considered to have been the main factor in securing' so great a number of awards, but it is pointed out that even without that competition the number would have been above that of the previous year. Regret is expressed that no assistance had been received from the Government, and it is also recorded that the grant from the Macarthy Trustees had been reduced to £lO. The result was that hardship had been imposed on the society, but every effort had been made to curtail expenditure. Hitherto, the head centre had issued the elementary and proficiency certificates free to schools and colleges, but on account of the financial position a scale of charges had been drawn up. These would be recommended for adoption at the annual meeting.
