TENNIS GIANTS

Play at Wimbledon

BOROTRA BEATEN

King and Queen Interested

By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. (Rec. June 26, 5.5 p.m.).

Loudou, June 25.

Their Majesties the King and Queen arrived at Wimbledon early and stayed late, and were rapturously received. Tljpy saw the super-showman, Borotra, defeated by the youthful Spanish champion, Maier. Partnering the brilliant young lefthander, Miss K. E. Stammers, who yesterday eliminated the seeded Swiss player, Mademoiselle Payot, Andrews recorded an exciting win over 11. C. Fisher and Mlle. Payot. The other matches were all as expected. Crawford’s defeat of Olliffi and Perry’s victory over America’s noted, doubles player, Allison, afforded little index as to what is likely to happen to Crawford when he faces Perry, who to-day won rather easily and is certainly a tough proposition. There is nothing in Olllff’s strategy to put Crawford really to the test. Shields was compelled to fight to the bitter end. Andrews and Miss Stammers won rather comfortably in the third round. Results are as follow: — Men's Singles.—Fourth round: Perry beat Allison. 6—4, 6—l. 4—6, 6—2; Wood defeated Mangin, 6—l. 9—7, 6—3 ; Shields beat Menzel, 6—4, 6—4, 10 —12, 6—4; Crawford beat Olliff, 6—3. 6—4. 3— 6—l; Maier beat Borotra, 6—3, 6—2, 2—6. 6—2; Satoh beat Timmer, 6—2, 6—3. 6—4; Vines (U.S.A.) beat Aoki (Japan), 6-—2, 3-"6, 6—3, 6—2; Austin (England) beat Feret (France). 6—4, B—6, 4 —6, 6—3. - Ladies’ Singles.—Mrs. Wills-Moody beat Mrs. Godfree. 6—3, 6—o. In the fourth round Miss B. Nuthall (England) beat Miss S. Palfrey (U.S.A.), B—6, 9—7; Miss Helen Jacobs (U.S.A.) beat Mrs. Jameson (England), 6 —l, 6 —2; Miss Heeley best Miss Stammers, 6—4, 6—3; Mme. Mathieu beat Mrs. Lowe, 6' 4, 8 • 6. Men’s Doubles.—Second round: Crawford and Hopman beat Della Porta and Gunn, 6—4, 6 —2, 7—5; Collins and Gregory beat Clemenger and Sproule, 4- —6, 6 —3, 4-—6, 7—5, 6-—2; Borotra

and Brugnon beat Shields and Spence, 11—9, 6—o, 6—-2 ; Wood and Mangin (U.S.A.) beat Maier (Spain) and li’isher, 4—6, 6—3, 6 —4, 6—4. In the third round Miki and Satoh beat von Cramm and Haensch. 6—2, 6—4, 5-—7, 6—3, In the second round of the mixed doubles Andrews and Miss Stammers beat Fisher and Mlle. Payot. 2-— 6, 6-—4, 6—4; Malfroy and Miss Heeley beat Austin and Mrs. Lycctt, 6—3, B—6; Spence and Miss Betty ■ Nuthall beat David and Miss James. 9—7. 11—9; Allison and Miss Jacobs beat Kingsley and Mrs. Godfree, 2—6, 6—2. 6—2. In the third round, Andrews and Miss Stammers beat Gilbert and Mrs, Über, 7—5, 6—4.

Now that the fourth round is completed the men’s singles championship has reached the really interesting stages. With the 'notable exceptions of Cochet and Borotra the seeded players have come through successfully. Cachet was beaten by I. G. Collins, who was in turn beaten by Satoh. Since the last Wimbledon tournament Satoh’s play has been extraordinarily consistent. With the defeat of Borotra and Feret France’s last representatives have vanished from the field. E. G. Maier, who beat Borotra, is first on the Spanish ranking list. He represented Spain in Davis Cup matches in 1929, 1930 and 1931. Last year he won the Spanish singles and mixed doubles championships at Barcelona, and the Hungarian doubles and mixed doubles at Vienna. During a. ipatch between Barcelona and the Queen’s Club he defeated H. W. Austin. Even without the French players, the quarter-finals will be truly international. Those still competing include three Americans, two Eglishmen, an Australian. a Spaniard and a Japanese.—“ Vantage.”
