COLLECTION OF CREAM

Overlapping by Lorries EXCESS COSTS PROBLEM Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, June 23. Excess costs in connection with cream collection as a result of overlapping by cream lorries were referred to by the Director of the Dairy Division, Mr. W. M. Singleton, in an address he delivered at the National Dairy Conference at Palmerston North yesterday. A survey made this season sug-

gested that these excess costs amounted to £33,080. “In 1927,” said Mr. Singleton, “I drew attention to excess costs in connection with cream collection due to overlapping of cream lorries, and indicated at that time that these excess costs were probably aggregating some £35,000 annually. The matter was considered to be of some moment to the industry, and since then there has been Improvement in one or more districts. In the majority of districts there has been little, if any, change for the better, and a further survey this season suggests that excess costs have only been reduced by £1920 to £33,080.

“It is recognised that this problem of overlapping is one with which it is difficult to deal. Not all dairy companies are equally efficient, and there is also the question of a shareholder of one company who may have removed to what might be recognised as the territory of another company. There are, in

addition, suppliers who have been unable to get financial assistance from their local dairy company, but may have succeeded in obtaining it from another company, provided their supply cream goes to the latter company.” Mr. Singleton said it was known that in some districts there were too many registered creameries, and that under the present circumstances only a collection every second day would procure a load, whereas were only one creamery operating, a daily delivery would probably be quite as economical. This would be in the interests of improvement in quality.
