ENGLISH COLONY

British at Hollywood Universal Studios lay claim to having tile largest English colony in Hollywood, with a baker's dozen of British subjects occupying important positions in the organisation. THE English influx began with Director James Whale, who is surrounded with other British people in his latest picture, “The Old Dark Horse.” These include Boris Karloff, the star, and Lilian Bond, Ernest Thesiger, Charles Laughton, Eva Moore, Brember Wills, and Raymond Massey, members *">< >o< >o<-

of the cast, as well as Benn W. Levy, who wrote the screen play. R. C. Sherriff, writer and producer of “Journey’s End,” came from London to write the screen version of “The Road Back,” and John L. Balderstou, adaptor and actor in both “Frankenstein” and “Dracula” on the stage, also joined the scenario staff, as did Gordon Wong Wellesley, Oxford graduate, who wrote “Shanghai Interlude.” Lew Ayres’s latest picture. Margaret Lindsey, recently added to the studio stock company, made her success on the English stage, and, lastly, Henry Macßae, in charge Of serial production, is British.

Shooting has commenced at the British and Dominions Studios, Borehani Wood, on “Thark,” the farce by Ben Travers,. with Ralph Lyn and Tom Walls star- ■ ring. They head a cast which includes Mary Brough, Robertson Hare, Claude Hulbert, and Evelyn Bostock. Toni Walls, who has just finished work on “Leap Year,” is directing.

Ilarpo Marx, of the Four MarxBrothers, ,is the only film actor who will never speak over the radio. He never utters a word ®n stage or screen.
