Policeman Assaulted PERSONAL AND GENERAL Wanganui, June 15. “I will not tolerate this sort of tiling. Anyone who interferes with the police in the execution of their duty must expect to be dealt with severely,” said Mr. J. H. .Salmon, S.M., at the Police Court when sentencing Ralph Fletcher Voyce to fourteen days’ imprisonment for assaulting Constable Willetts. On a charge of having been drunk, Voyce was convicted and discharged. It was stated that Voyce, who is a wharf labourer, called at the home of the stevedore and complained that he was not getting enough work. He was advised to leave, and when he did not the police were called. When Constable Willetts arrived Voyce struck him a blow behind the ear. Senior-Sergeant McLean remarked that accused was a “wild man when in liquor.” Auxiliary Water Supply. A concrete weir, which is being constructed across the Kai Iwi stream as part of an auxiliary water supply scheme for Wanganui city, is about two-thirds completed, according to the report of the city engineer, Mr. J. S. L. Deem, submitted at a meeting of the city council, last night. It was also stated that excavation work for the pump house had been started, and the delivery of the pumping plant was expected during the month. The construction of the auxiliary pumping plant will relieve Wanganui of any fear of shortness of water during the dry summer months, and will, incidentally, save the city some thousands of pounds. Dental Clinic to be Reopened. As a result of meetings of interested parents it has been decided to reopen the central dental clinic for primary school children in Wanganui. The clinic will be established in the Queen’s Park school buildings. For some time school committees, actively assisted by householders, have been working to have the clinic restored. i Town Clerk Voluntarily Reduces Salary. In a letter to the Wanganui City Council the town clerk, Mr. G. Murch, stated that, in order to assist the council in the present financial position, and to bear portion of the burden carried by other members of the staff, he intended to refund to the council, in addition to a previous voluntary refund, an amount equal to the percentage reduction recently imposed, until his agreement expires in October. The amount involved will be equivalent to £6O a year. 1 Inter-Collegiate Rugby., The annual matches between the first and second Rugby fifteens of Te Ante and Wanganui colleges will be played on the Wanganui Collegiate’’School grounds on July 20. The matches have been an annual fixture since 1807—excepting 1901. when Te Aute was unable to travel.
