“A Suggestion Box”

Sir, —In an address given bv the Hon. A. J. Murdoch he expressed himself against the appointment of further commissions. He thought the necessary investigations could be carried out just as well and at much less cost by a committee of members of Parliament. The bulk of people will, I think, agree with him, seeing the members of Parliament are paid to do this work. In Wellington a day or two ago a large deputation waited on the Government to urge that something should be done to provide work for our boys. The Government confessed that it had neither money or ideas, and appealed to the public for the latter. Now, we all know that the average man is sensitive about writing to the Press or airing his ideas on a public platform, and the result is that many a good idea is lost. Many professional, business, and practical men, who have made a success of anything they have undertaken, are well qualified to give an idea, and if the Government would start a suggestion box scheme a great many practictl suggestions would flow in. The suggestion box idea is nothing new; it is in vogue in England, America, and on the Continent, in the factories and stores, also in a few places in the Dominion with good results, saving time and monev. . . . Why not apply it to the ship of state? I feel sure that the suggestions sent in would surprise many o£ our members, and would on the vjhole be more effective and less costly than commissions’ findings.—l am, etc., AN IDEA. June 11.
