OBITUARY

Former City Engineer MR. ANDREW J. PATERSON The death occurred at. his residence, No. 1 Levy Street, Wellington, of Mr. Andrew J. Paterson, formerly city engineer of Wellington, and a gentleman who in his profession was well known throughout New Zealand. The late Mr. Paterson, who was 62 years of age, spent many years of his life in Australia, and was connected with engineering works in Queensland and New South Wales, where as a supervising engineer he was especially valuable as an organiser, and in handling large gangs of men. He joined the staff of tlie city engineer’s department early in the century, and for years was one of the assistant-engineers. He resigned to take up the position of bor-

ough engineer at Gisborne, and whilst he was there the borough instituted its first big gravitation water supply. When he left Gisborne, Mr. Paterson returned to Wellington, and became assistant engineer to the then city engineer, the late Mr. W. H. Morton, and on his demise Mr. Paterson became acting-city engineer, a position he held until the appointment of Mr. G. A. Hart as city engineer. A little later Mr. Paterson severed his .connection with the Wellington City Corporation, since when he has been in business on his own account, chiefly in connection with modern road-surfac-ing works. In that department Mr. Paterson had a great deal of experience, as it was during his term of office as city engineer that many of our roads, including the Hutt Road, were surfaced with bituminous concrete. The late Mr. Paterson was a member of the New Zealand Institute of Engineers. Mr. James Gibson Gore The death has occurred at Timaru of Mr. James Gibson Gow, an ex-school inspector and a member of the Canterbury Education Board, states a Press Association telegram.
