THE RACING WORLD

MR. CORRY’S TEAM

i Unlikely to Race at - Masterton I NOTES AND COMMENTS (By ''The \Vatclier.".i ! Although it is not absolutely definite, ’ advices received in Wellington from Bleu--1 heim yesterday were Io the effect that n was extremely unlikely that any of Mr. Corry’s team engaged at Masterton will ‘ be at the meeting. T. Lt. George, trainer, ! is due in Wellington to-morrow, and will ' be going through to Auckland in connec- ‘ tion with the Croupier business. ? Bronze Eagle for Australia. jj Bronze Eagle, the crack three-year-old, B is to be taken to Sydney for the spring ‘ racing. He was galloping brilliantly a » few weeks ago at Takauini, when he ?j knocked himself, and in consequence could not fulfil bis autumn engagements, ’ which was very bad luck for bis owner. ' Dr. Bing, for he appeared to have classic prospects second to none at that. time. Dr. ij Ring states that the eolt has quite re- !* covered now, and will be taken in hand again in June: and will be shipped to Sydney at the end of August. « Epitaph Changes Hands. * Messrs. Wright, Stephenson and Co., a Ltd., bloodstock salesmen, have disposed >i of, on account of Mr. I. G. Duncan, the 4 brood mare. Epitaph’(Absurd—Eulogy), 4 together with her colt foal by Paper 3 Money. Epitaph, who represented one « of the most successful families in the 4 New Zealand Stud Book, is the dam <.f J the successful two-year-old, Tea Trader, ij who defeated Lady Quex in the All Aged ; Sthkes. Epitaph and her foal will re- ] main in the Dominion, as the purchaser, j Mr. Ronald McKay, of New South Wales, is also a shareholder in the Elderslie Stud. Ltd. Rational H’s Rider. The Riccarton trained Rational If has arrived and gone on to Masterton. where he will run in the Cup to-day. Rational II will afterwards go on to Awapuni. He will be ridden on the trip by G. Humphries. For Awapuni. Gay Crest has been mainly handled in • his races this season by LI. Gray, but with the suspension of Gray other riding engagements have been made for the Mauawatu meeting. Gay Crest and Tout le Mond will be ridden by B. JI. Brodie. They are due in Wellington on Sunday morning, when 11. ,Cutts will also travel with Porlock. Fleeting Glance, and Winsome Hind. As usual. R. E. Coveny will ride Sir Charles Clifford’s horses. Health Improved. North Island racing men will be interested to hear that D. C. Watts, whose health some time ago necessitated a lengthy sojourn iu Otago Central, was back in the sulky at Oamaru on. Saturday, steering horses from J. Heudersou’s stable. Watts served his apprenticeship with W. . H. Dwyer al Wanganui, aud was a very capable horseman. Increasing weight decided him to luru to the sport of trotting. To go to Sydney. In addition to Gallant Fox, S. G. Ware intends to take First. Song to Australia. First Song is a three-year-old bay colt by Songbird out. of First Hope, by Mark hope . from the Stcpuiak mare Royal Blumes. He was bred by Mr. D. Jones, of Waipiata. and is leased by Mr. James Black, of Dunedin, in whose interests he has raced since December 4. First Song has been confidently backed on several occasions by his party, but up till the River-ton-Easter meeting he was a disappointment. There, however, he struck real form, winning a race on each day of the three-day fixture. First Song is a' first foal. A Press Association telegram from Dunedin yesterday stated that S. G. Ware leaves on Monday for Melbourne with Gallant Fox. A. E. Didham will go across to do the riding. Will Not Be Long. * A southern writer says that Porlock was troublesome at the start, of the Novice Plate at Oamaru. aud got off badly. She rattled home very fast, however, and should not be long in returning a dividend. Masterton Candidate's Gallop. Prior to leaving Hawera, Constant Sun. who is to compete in the Masterton Cup, went pleasingly in a gallop Over seven furlongs in Imm. 36 l-ssec., finishing in front of Davistock. Awaken Not For Manawatu. ] Hawera reports state that Awaken will , not compete at the Manawatu meeting. , Aladdin. J Aladdin got into a scramble in-the j .hack race at Oamaru, and was lame iu j ■ front afterward. The trouble is, how- • ever, not considered serious and should ‘ not interfere with his future pro- I gramme, which may include a trip to . Victoria. If Aladdin passes a veterinary examination. A. Trilford is likely to accompany S. G. Ware. Donoghue's Opinion of Phar Lap.

When S. Donoghue was in America he was rather anxious to have a mount on Phar Lap, and on his return to England he expressed Die following opin- | ion of the chestnut: “I flew from Los s Angeles to San Francisco. four hundred and eighty miles, in one hundred and , ten minutes, to see Phar Lap. He is , a grand-looking animal and compares . with anything we have in England. He is well over sixteen hands, with power- r Cui quarters and lots of character. He has been given topweight in the big 1 race. He looks in a class by himself, • but perhaps these courses may be too • sharp for him. He has done well since t his arrival. 1 Ex-New Zealander Wins. r At the Helena Vale (Perth) meeting on April 2 the Farewell Welter, seven 1 furlongs, was won by the Karamu-bred <■ gelding Polydectes (King Mark—lla- v mos). Autobiography was third. Death of Phar Lap. “Everyone in Sydney seemed to be very upset about the death of Phar Lap,” said C. Davey, trainer of Compris, who returned from Sydney by the Zealandia yesterday. "Even people who were not interested in racing at all expressed genuine sympathy.” . Anomalous Position.

It has been ruled in England by the stewards of the National Hunt Committee that Mr. IV. P. Dutton, who won a Diverpool Grand National on Tipperary Tim, and recently took out a license as a professional trainer in England, is still entitled to ride in races confined to amateurs. The Sundown Park stewards asked f<» a decision after Mr. Dutton rode in an amateur race at that track. If certainly seems anomalous‘that' a paid trainer can ride in races restricted to jockeys who are supposed not to receive Lord Lonsdale’s Joke.

MASTERTON MEETING

Fick! for First Day’s Events PROSPECTS REVIEWED (By "The Watcher. - ’) The rain that has fallen during the past couple of days lias put the Opaki track in first-class order for the opening of the Masterton autumn meeting to-day. and as at the time of writing the weather is clearing, conditions for racing should be excellent. Good fields are engaged and a particularly tine lot of handicappers will parade in the Cup race. The programme is timed to start at 12 o'clock, and the card is as follows: — 12.0— NOVICE .STAKES, of 260 sovs. Five furlongs and a half. Araios .... 8 5 Gay Song ... 8 5 Rene Belle . 8 5 Sailing .... 8 5 Purse 8 5 Popette ... S 5 Red Top ... s 5 Cha Heron . 8 5 Clangor ... 8 5 Minstrel Lad S 5 Acreliet ... S 3 Cnpe Horn— WlHownicre 8 5 Kilccit filly . 8 3 Tbornproot . S 5 'J raymela .. S 3 Tnkakua .. 8 3 Two-year-olds and upward all carry the same weight this year. Form is represented by Clangor, Thornproof, Arnios and Sailing. Clangor was unlucky at Wairarapa, and with B. 11. Morris up is assured of favouritism, while Thorn proof will probably be best supported of the others. 12.45— LAWN HACK HANDICAP, of 70 sore. Ono mile. Joie de Vai . 9 5 Orby’s Choice 8 0 Appledore . 8 9 Kalmuk ... 7 9 Lyrical .... S 6 Lady Makere 7 <> Revision .. 8 3 Capetown .. 7 6 If Air. Corry’s horses are absent it will weaken this field, but if all the others start there will be two«dividends. Joie de Vai and Lyrical have the best form. The latter failed at Wairarapa. but as she has always gone well for B. IT. Morris it is not too much to expoet | her to return to her best to-day. The lightweights will all have to improve and Joie de val and Lyrical will uo doubt command most support. 1.35— lIIGHWETGHT HANDICAP, of SO sovs. One mile. Make Up ... 11 2 Black Mint ..9 5 Full Mark . 10 2 Easterly .. 9 2 Balloon .... 911 Miss Hastings 9 0 With Make Up out it will be a onedividend field. Full Mark is nicely in aud will be well supported, and Balloon’s form entitles him to support also. Of the other three. Easterly reads most likely. She has not been racing well of late, but she will go a lot better now that rain hns fallen. On the whole, however, backers may prefer Full Alark. 2.10 MASTERTON GOLD CUP HANDICAP, of 225 sovs. One mile anil a quarter. Arikira ... 9 9 Esteem .... 7 5 Grand Jury . 8 9 Statuary ... 7 0 Gibraltar .. 8 7 Emittenl ... 7 0 Easter Time . 7 8 Foghorn ... 7 0 Rational II . 7 8 Constant Sun 7 0 Shrewd ... 7 7 Pewa 7 0 Jayson .... 7 5 Imatoagir! 7 0 The influence of a good trophy as a draw-card is seen in the attempt of owners to lift to-day’s valuable prize. It should be a good race. The best form is that of Arikira. Grand Jury. Gibraltar. Rational 11, Eminent, Foghorn and Constant Sun. On the whole, however, the light end of the handicap will need to improve upon anything recently shown. The favourites may be Gibraltar and Arikira. but Rational IT will have friends also. 2.55— GRANDSTAND HACK HANDICAP, of 70 sovs. Seven furlongs. Appledore . 9 7 Kotak! Eka . 8 2 Revision .. 9 0 Pahiko .... 8 0 Gold Sand . 812 Midnight Flower .... 8 9 Echo 8 0

Tavora .... S 7 Trader Horn 8 0 Manuiri ... 8 7 Park Acre .. 8 0 Gran Chaco .86 If Mr. Corry's pair. Appledore and Revision, are absent, it will leave the field devoid of any outstanding form. Flower, Tavora and Gran Chaco seem likely to do host and most consideration by backers may be for Tavora and Gran Chaco. FLYING HANDICAP. of 90 sors. Six furlongs. Historic ... 9 2 Imperial Fame 7 8 Orapal .... 8 0 Atholspear . 7 3 Moa Bird .. 7 13 Miladt .... 7 (I Miladi being out will mean another one-dividend field. She would have run well. Historic has a handy weight but will probably not be ready. On Ihe other hand, recent racing will stand Io Orapal and Imperial Fame. Moa Bird would be a prospect if in form, and the same applies to Atholspear. At. his best, Atholspear would bo hard to heat, but it is a long time since he showed form. Backers will probably make Orapai favourite. •1.20— LANSDOWNE HACK HANDICAP, ot 65 sovs. Six furlongs. Alpinist .... 8 6 Lady Ronald 7 4 Orby’s Kinross .... 7 0 Choice 8 1 Blue Heaven . 7 0 Tavora .... 7 7 Aralos .... 7 0 False Scent . 7 4 Thermopylae 7 0 Alpinist and Tavora have most claims Io consideration. False Scent may possibly produce one of his infrequent surprises and Populace, Lady Ronald, Kinross and Araios also have chances. Alpinist and Tavora may be best supported.

the racing protection branch of the National Workingmen’s Constitutional Council. Thornton Heath, who asked Lord Lonsdale if the report was eorrect that he had decided to dispose of his racing stud and sever his connection with the turf, the following telegram was received :— “Thank you for your letter and kindly thought. I have no earthly intention of retiring from the turf until I am warned olf- —Lonsdale.” Settled Down. 1

Mr. D. H. McLeod and trainer 11. 8. Greene have settled down at Mentone with xAraunah and Lady Alert. Both horses have done well on the trip. Araunah in particular. They will probably commence racing in Australia on Saturday week. Marlborough Track Good.

Adviee has been received from Blenheim that the rains experienced there during the week-end have had a most beneticia? effect on the racecourse. The trackshould be in excellent order for the racing carnival at the end of the month, for which entries close to-night. Reminders.

Nominations for the Marlborough Racing Club’s meeting on April 28 and 30 close at. 9 o'clock to-night. Nominations for the Marton Jockey Club’s meeting, to be held on April 30. will close to-night at 9 o’clock.

FOR MANAWATU

Auckland Horses Leave

Dominion Special Service. Auckland. April 14. E. Pope left Auckland to-day with Tea Trader and High Comedy. Speedmint and Ganpat. were to join the train at To Kuiti. where they have beau since that meeting, and lhe quartet are to go on to race at Awapuni. J. T. Jamieson will leave for Sydney on April 29 with a team of eight: or nine horses. Brazannn. who is to race at the pony meetings, will go across at the same time. ADMIRAL DRAKE UNLIKELY FOR SYDNEY Admiral Drake is considered by bis trainer Io have been desperately unlucky to lose the Sydney Cup by a head to Johnnie Jason. Drawing No. 16 at Hie barrier, the Admiral was ridden over the first furlong to secure a position, only to find that tbe effort was wasted, as none of the other riders would set. a pace, and lite position could have been obtained without effort. Admiral Drake was left in front with Alcrotin. and when the latter retired beaten in the straight Johnnie Jason was enabled to get through the opening. In doing so he touched and unbalanced Admiral Drake, who lost three-quarters of a length, whieh he had reduced to a head at the winning post. C. Gieseler is anxious to make another a I lack on the Sydney stakes if he can find a suitable horse in-his team, but it is not likely that Admiral Drake will go across again, as he was allotted 9.13 in a mile and a quarter handicap on the final day of the autumn meeting at Rand wick. SIMBA TO RACE AGAIN Although Simba, lhe mystery racehorse, at present is in very poor condition and cannot possibly be raced, it is hoped that the gelding will be able to face the barrier in about three months’ time (says a Sydney writer). No racehorse in this State in recent years has been surrounded by so much mystery as Simba. He came into Australia on May 5 last year, and on July 3 Mr. George Guest announced that he was the owner. Little was heard of Simba until his mysterious disappearance from stables at, Alexandria. When he was found his eyes were dull, his ribs prominent, aud he had. a thoroughly jaded and dejected appearance. Mr. Guest . said recently that Simba was in very bad condition. He had not had proper feed since he disappeared, nor had he been looked after as a racehorse should. If: was his intention, however. to put Simba into training and commence immediately to give him proper cure and attention. “It should take about three months to get Simba back into form. - ’ said Mr. Guest, “and then I intend to race him.” Mr. Guest added that, although Simba might not hold his own with the best company at. Randwick, he had every hope of winning on suburban courses with him.

TROTTING NOTES

Thames Meeting To-morrow THE CARD REVIEWED (By "Overcheck.”) The Thames Trotting Club Jias received very generous acceptances for its meeting on Saturday, ami the racing promises to be of a very interesting character. ’The programme is as follows: — HIKUTAIA HANDICAP (Harness), of 85 sovs.; 3.7 class. One mile aud a-

Therc is little form to go upon in the Hikutaia Handicap. Last season Jester registered some fairly good performances, and if lie returns to his earlier form b& should race well. Pukemiro ran second to Pegaway at Claudelands in December, and is likely to have a good following. Of the others Derby Fame may be iu most demand.

KEREPEEIII HANDICAP (Harness), of 100 sovs.: 3.31 class. One mile ami a-half. Astral ser Nathaniel .... ser Eleawah ser Rolfe Audubon ser Judy Tborpc .. ser Realty ser Jersey Thorpe ser Great Fame .. 12 Mvrtlene .... ser Bey de Quest . -18

Tn the Kerepeehi Handicap Astral, Eleawab. and Key de Quest should run well forward. The first-named has been racing prominently in his recent engagements, while Eleawah ran second to Luminate at Wanganui over 10 furlongs. Rey de Quest: has a couple of wins and three seconds to his credit, and is an improving horse. Astral may be favourite.

PARAWAI HANDICAP (Harness), of 85 sovs.: 3.50 class. One mile and a-half. Grand Triumph ser Wild Downs .. scr Happy Thought'ser Win Huon •.... scr Kohewah .... scr Wirlwhata ... scr Mattie Bingen Bell .. 12 Herbilwyu ser Summertime . 38 Nebraska .... ser Tiwha -IS Miss Braeside . scr Wikitorla .... -IS Pear) Parrish . ser Moko Girl ... 98 ■ Miss Braeside, Bingen Bell, and Tiwha may take a hand in the settlement of the Parawai Handicap. Miss Eraeside ran third to Worthy Queen and Zanzibar at Claudelands in October, registering 3.55 on a slightly holding track. Bingen Bell was third to Zanzibar and Bessie Parrish at the Waikato meeting in December, registering 3.40, while Tiwha raced well at Auckland in February. Bingen Bell may receive most support.

THAMES TROTTING CUP HANDICAP (Harness), of 200 sovs.; 4.40 class. Two miles. ■ High Sen .... ser Master Huia .. 24 Prince Pedro . scr Bingen Crest . "8 llaydus ser Glandore .... "0 Sister Rose .. 12 Our Peter .... 38 Explosion ... 21 Dealer 48 Mr. Penally .. 21 First Flight .. 48 Lady Yvonne . 24 Great Parrish . 72. After his easy win in the Wanganui Cup Air. Penalty is sure to be well fancied in the Thames Cup, in whieh he has gone back a couple of seconds. Sister Rose, who won at Taranaki when raeet-

ing Mr. Penalty on equal terms, and Prince Pedro may follow in the betting. Great Parrish is the class horse of the field, but 72 yards is a good bit of ground to concede to improvers such as Mr. Penalty and Sister Rose.

PUBIRI HANDICAP (Saddle), of 180 sovs.; 2.21. class. One mile. Astral scr Nathaniel .... scr Don Juau .... ser Rolfe Audubon scr Judy Thorpe . scr Great Fame .. 12 Jersey Thorpe ser Mythorpc .... 12 Loyalty ser Princess Thea 48 Marosa scr Tbe saddle race (Puriri Handicap) may see support forthcoming for Astral, Princess Thea, and Jersey Thorpe. Princess Thea has the best form and may be favourite.

The running of the Hikutaia Handicap should throw some light on the prospects of those engaged in the Turua Handicap. Fisher showed good form when he won at Kaikoura iu' February, and with Free Logan (provided he goes away right) may be prominent at the business end, notwithstanding tbc starts they are conceding.

PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP (Harness), of 135 sovs.; 4.59 class. Two miles.

Bingen Bell .. scr Hai-uy Grattan 38 Kohewah .... ser Lord Haldane. 38 Nebraska .... ser Laurier 36 Wikitorla .... scr Bessie Parrish 48 Moko Girl ... 12 Windehnt .... 9G

The finish of tbc President’s Handicap may see Moko Girl, Bessie Parrish, and Windchat well to the fore. At Auckland in February Bessie Parrish won over 12 furlongs from Todd Bingen and Moko Girl when conceding the latter 48 yards. Windehat, who was conceding the winner 72 yards, was fourth. On that form Bessie Parrish and Windehat may be held in most esteem.

KOPU HANDICAP (Harness), of 135 sovs.; 2.52 class. One mile aud aquarter. Direct Morning scr Raydus 12 Mr. Penalty .. scr Sister Rose ... 12 Oliver Thorpe . scr Explosion .... 21 Prince Pedro . scr Master Huia .. 21 Princess Thea, ger Dad’s Hope ... 38 Rey de Quest scr Our Peter .... 38 Gaza .12 First Flight .. 48 High Sea 12. On tbe handicap as it stands Princess Thea. Rey de Quest, and Raydus will not lack support in the Kopu llaudicap, which should provide a good finale to the day’s racing. WESTMERE FOALS Air. John Douald, the Westmere studmaster, has weaned a particularly attractive lot of foals, including the first crop of youngsters sired by Coronach’s three-quarter brother, Captain Bunsby (Captain Cuttie—Wet Kiss). The leading sire, Chief Ruler, is also strongly represented, aud there will be included in the draft for the national sales colts by Grand Knight and Limond. The Limond colt is out of an imported mare in White Tulip, a -grand-daughter of Suudridge. As Limond has mated particularly well with Absurd (sou of Suudridge) mares, this mating should also be productive of a good galloper. There are three fillies by Captain Bunsby out of Tinkler (dam of Hot Spring. South Australian Derby winuer), and rhe English mares Timid and Rapide (dam of Speed). The. Chief Ruler colts are from tbe English mares Baylock and Violet 11. and Rosellate (dam of Tenterden and Richborough), and the fillies are from Dovelet (dam of Eaglet), Chelae (sister in blood to Trivalve), and the English mares. Very Hot, Prophet’s Mark, and Pebble 11. . The Grand Knight eolt is out of Coconut (dam of Rulanut).

MORE AUSTRALIAN YEARLINGS Two yearling fillies were purchased at tbe Sydney sales for New Zealand, clients by Mr. C. E. Robertson, of Messrs. Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd. These comprise a filly by Rosewing*, a successful young sire by Sunstar, and coming from tbe same family as Gloaming, and a filly by Top Gallant, tbc imported, lion of Swyiiford. The latter filly is out of the imported inare Golden Jest, by BlackJester, from Queen d’Or, by William the Third. Queen d’Or is an own sister to Maid of Orange, the dam of Arausio. Both fillies were from winner-producing dams, the Rosewing filly being an own brother to Whittingham, who recently won three, races on end in Sydney, and holds the six furlong course record at Canterbury Park. This lilly, a particularly attractive type, is like Kuvera, the champion two-year-old, out of a Linacre mare, while her dam is a sister to the dam of high-class winners in Bawn-na-Glas and Bavacre, as well ns the former New Zealander. Trosham. The Rosewing filly has entered Mrs. McDonald’s stable at Awapuui.
