Glut of Apples
Sir,—l s it a fact that in Nelson the surplus of fruit is being thrown into the sea because there is no market for it? If so, surely it is an outrageous state of affairs. Is there uo way in which such fruit, could be put into cool storage and used all the winter to help feed those in dire want? I quite realise that the growers cannot afford the expense of getting it to Wellington, but the Government could easily, arrange for it to be brought over and stored. It is a crime to waste good fruit at any time, and more especially at this period of hardship, want, aud distress. There arc many charitable institutions and boards who'would be thankful for apples and pears to help feed tbe hungry ones in their care, and stewed fruit and bread and butter to many people would be a luxury, and what could be better for the nourishment and health of children. _! am, etc, ..
