MOUNTAIN GUIDES

Question of Licenses CLUBS REVIEW BILL The Bill for the licensing of alpine guides was considered at a meeting, of the Federated Mountain Clubs of New Zealand recently. The committee expressed its opinion that the clause, which appeared in the original draft of the Bill, referring to tbe setting up of a board to issue licenses should not have been deleted. It. was also stated that there was very little chance of the Bill limiting guideless climbing. The Auckland Tramping Club wrote expressing confidence in the federation in any action which it deemed advisable iu connection with the Alpine Guides Licensing Bill. The Alpine Sports Club forwarded its opinions on the guide legislation, and the Tararua Tramping Club wrote supporting its attitude.

It was stated that very little had been done by the National Park Board to give effect to the safety measures suggested by tbe federation committee. So far, a lino from the Ohakune hut to the Salt Memorial hut had been poled by Mr. Blyth, and his action ratified by the park board. It was resolved that, failing satisfactory attention being given by the board to the suggestions made, further representations be made.

The secretary reported that after having received opinions from various quarters, particularly from the University of Otago, it seemed impracticable as yet to secure a suitable formula for a concentrated biscuit or food. Dr. Moir stated that in his opinion dried milk,, with a hard biscuit to supply Hie necessary roughage, was the most satisfactory dry ration.

.Representation on national park boards was discussed, and It was stated lluil tlie federal ion. by virtue of its Interest in such matters, was entitled to representation on national park boards. It. was decided to interview the authorities on tlie subject. The proposed constitution for the Ski Council of the Federated Mountain Clubs was received, ami. as amended by the committee, was adopted. II was decided that the ski sub-committee should carry on until the annual meeting.
