MANAWATU COMPETITIONS

The Competitions Festival at Palmerston North will start on May 1(5 and entries will close on April 23. There is every indication of a large outside entry as well as good local support. The judge of Hie music classes is .Mr. 11. Barry Coney, of Auckland. Professor Maxwell Walker, of Auckland, will judge the elocution section, and Miss Evelyn Edgar, of Christchurch, who Ims also been engaged for the Wellington 1932 Competitions, will judge the dancing.

PARAMOUNT THEATRE. “The Miracle Woman,” a drama with a powerful and true-to-life theme, will have its final screening at the Paramount Theatre to-night. Barbara Stanwyck is the star of this great film. She is supported by David Manners and others. "Dance Team." Classed by many critics as the "wonder team of the year," a classification they rightfully deserve following their remarkably human characterisations in "Over the Hill.” James Dunn and Sally Eilers make their third screen appearance together in the leading roles of "Dance Team,” the Fox production which opens at the Paramount Theatre to-morrow. "Dance Team” is the screen, ' version of Sarah Addington’s successful novel of the same name, which tells of the struggles of two ambitious youngsters in their endeavour to emulate the success of the Vernon Castles. Maurice ami Florence Walton and other famous ballroom celebrities. The roles are said to be as human and lovable as the parts Dunn and Miss Eilers impersonated in “The Bnd Girl." Minna Gonibell. who played with Dunn and Miss Eilers in "Bad Girl.” heads the large supporting cast of “Dance Team,” which also includes Edward Crandall. Harry Beresford. Nora Lane, Ralph Morgan ami Claire Maynard. The screen play was written by Edwin Burke, whose adaptation and dialogue aided so greatly in making “Bad Girl” the sensational hit it was. The new film was directed, hy Sidney Lanfield. There will be a specially selected supporting bill of a particularly high standard. MAJESTIC THEATRE. The vivid personality ami splendid singing voice of Miss Gracie Fields find, plenty of scope in “Sally in Our Alley, which will finish to-night at, the Majestic Theatre. Gracie Fields is the fairy godmother of the slum children, the popular singing waitress at an inn. the Green Man. and the sweetheart of an English Tommy, who is reported killed lull turns up ten years later to find Sally still wailing for him. Included in Hie supports is an exhibition ol batting and bowling by such well-known members of the Australian Test team as Woodfull, Grimmett, Bradman, Oldfield. Ponsford and McCabe. "Tiie Passionate Plumber.” With an all-star east headed by Buster Kenton, the “frozen-faced” comedian, and including Jimmy Durante, Polly Moran. Gilbert Rowland and Irone Purcell, "The Passionale Plumber." MetroGold wyn-.M ay er's newest mirth-provok-ing comedy, will have its premiere al the Majestic Theatre to morrow. Tim picture is said to suit Buster Keaton admirably, mid every member of the east Ims n part in which full justice is done. Those who remember Buster Kenton's brilliant work in “The Hollywood Revue." "Parlour. Bedroom and Bath." "Sidewalks of New York.” and other films will realise that something right out of the ordinary is being offered in “The Passionate Plumber." which is described as n "riot of fun." Jimmy Durante is. of course, as funny as ever, mi l is a good foil for Keaton. Polly Moran certainly needs no introduction, mid ail who saw Irone Purcell in "'rhe Man in Possession" can rest assured that she will be finite ns good in this new film. There will be n really excellent supporting bill.
