BOOKINGS ARE BOUND TO BE HEAVY RESERVE NOW AT BRISTOL PIANO CO- OR THEATRE. (PHONE 44-144) OUR BABIES By STR F. TRUDY KING General President of the Plunkct Society. For the time being I have undertaken (o carry on the "Our Babies” column, both in order to save the time of the Plunket Nurses and also because the Central Authorities of the Society wish me to give a Simple Summary of our past History and present situation, and a rough forecast of the Plunket Society’s aims, aspirations and apparent prospects in New Zealand and overseas in the immediate future. Preliminary Foreword. At the present time, and for at least another year of increasing financial stress, the duty of the whole Community is obviously to do everything in its power to tide our Country over the universal crisis in which New Zealand has become involved along with the rest of the civilised world. Far from being exempt from this primary Economic Obligation, the first duty of the Plunket Society is to assist the Government (irrespective of class, station or party) to win through; and this the Society is already doing.— 1. By reducing its direct expenditure and calls on the Treasury as far as possible consistent with efficient service to Mother and Child. 2. By appealing to Parents to do everything in their power to obviate repeated requests for the Plunket Nurses to visit mother and child in their own homes by asking the Mother to take her child to the Central Plunket Rooms for advice, weighing, etc. 3. By putting on sale in Shops, through chemists and grocers. “Kariol.” “Karilac” and other Plunket preparations for simplifying and perfecting the preparation of Humanised Milk in the home, in the cheapest and best way.

PRESENT and PROSPECTIVE INFANTILE DEATH RATES ■ for NEW ZEALAND. A PREDICTION. Looking ahead, say 5, 10 and 15 years respectively, what will be our Infantile Death Rate? I venture to predict that the N.Z. Infantile Mortality rate, which is now about 33 per 1000 births or 3.3 per cent, will have fallen in the next 5 years to .. .. 2.3 per cent, that in 10 years it will have fallen to .. .. 1.3 per cent, and that in 15 years it will have fallen to only 1 per cent. N.B.—The grounds for the above estimate will be given in the course of the next few weekly "Our Babies" articles. Of course, the World will be quite incredulous as to the possibility of ever bringing our Infantile Mortality rate below 2 per eent. Wait and Sec.' Meantime, I need merely point out that 27 years ago (i.e.. 2 years before the foundation of our Society in Dunedin), I stated in public that if the trouble were taken to instruct wonlen in the needs of themselves anti their children (in the same way as the simple scientific principles for the rearing of livestock were even then being instilled into the fanning community), that this simple measure would “save from death at least one child per diem (or 365 a year) besides making more than 20,000 children a year who survive hardy, healthy and resistive to.disease.” In a few years from that date New Zealand was actually saving more than a 1000 lives per annum—or three times what 7 had ventured to prophesy! At the present time there is no need or excuse for relying on the more personal impressions or opinions of anyone unless founded on long, logical, painstaking, practical research and investigation into the History. Facts ami Figures of the world-wide Child Welfare movement of the last twenty years—or at least of the last ten years. On all such matters. lam now entitled to speak ant! do speak with complete conviction, based on long experience ami unremitting study of the essentials for saving child life and ensuring robust health for the survivors. Once again. Wait anti See the Evidence which will be printed in "Our Babies” Column!
