THEFT OF BOTTLES

Sequel to Overnight Deal An early-morning visit, to a bottle yard following a deal in bottles on the previous day resulted in the appearance iu the Police Court yesterday, before Mr. E. Page, S.M., of George Stanley Stewart, alias Matiibera, a motor-driver, aged 37. He pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing, on March 30, bottles valued at £l/2/10, the property of William Hildreth. At 5.45 a.m. on March 30, said Sen-ior-Sergeant Scott, Stewart was seen emerging from Hildreth’s bottle yard. He explained to Constable Young that he was getting bottles left there the previous night, but inquiries showed that be had no permission to be about the yard. He had removed the bottles by putting them in a sack, then pulling it under the gate. “On the previous day Stewart, under the name of Wilson, sold bottles to the value of £l/13/10 to the storeman," said the Senior-Sergeant. “There is a strong suspicion that Hildreths were buying their own bottles, for Stewart sold previous lots to the value of 10/- and £l.” Counsel for Stewart asked for probation. Slewart and some partners of his had bought a fishing launch and truck, and the resulting work would keep him out of town and trouble. The bottles bad been recovered aud Stewart, when seen at the yard, had made no attempt to escape, thus saving the police time and trouble. Stewart was sentenced to a month’s imprisonment.
