THE RACING WORLD

BACK FROM SYDNEY

New Zealand Horses A. D. WEBSTER’S PLANS Some Notes and Comments (By “The Watcher/’) There were several returning New Zealanders and horses on board the Zealandia, which arrived from Sydney yesterday. A. MeAulay brought back Aigli--march, who won the Autumn Stakes amt the Cumberland Stakes at Uandwick, being the most successful New Zealander at the meeting, with stakes Won totalling fluid. Nightmarch did not make a very good trip home, but he will probably race in the Awapuni Cup. His trainer was making inquiries about his engagements at the meeting. McAulay purchased a yearling at the Sydney sales, a bay. or brown colt by Higbfield from Grey Hairs. He is a brother to Nancy Grey, the dam vf Tom Pinch. His price was lOOgns. Mate for Prince Pombal. J. McLaughlin brought back Prince Pombal, who was unable to show his best form owing to shoulder soreness. A trip to Melbourne with him was under consideration, and he was entered for the V. meeting next Saturday, but it was finally abandoned. McLaughlin also had on board a yearling by Cistercian from Nellie Grafton, the dam of Coot Dau. The youngster, a bay gelding, cost DOgus. Webster to Settle in Australia. A. D. Webster, who has spent almost as much time iu Australia/duriug the past few years as iu New Zealand, returned with Hirst Acre, Movie Star aud Hunt the Slipper. Webster intends to settle in Australia, aud he will go back in July. .Unless the tax On winning wagers in Sydney is withdrawn or greatly modified, he will not stay in Sydney, but will go to Melbourne. Parkland, Bayacre aud My Talisman were left at Canterbury Park under the care of 1. A. ■Williams. T. Webster also remained in Syducy. Webster also brought back a yearling filly by High Art from Into - ligcucc, purchased for 30gnS., by Mr. J. J. Hayward, intelligence is by Paddington from Merry Trick, a mure bred in New Zealand by the late Sir George Clifford, by Treadmill from Delusive, thus sister to Miss Mischief and Counterfeit. No Luck With Compels. The liiceartou trainer, C. Davey,, returned with the Kilbroney gelding Comilris. Compris secured only £4O at the meeting, with a third in the Xocal Handicap, but his form was good, under big weights. Lady Pain’s Win. . Mr. W. R. Kemball and his private trainer, G. Jones, did not .bring back any of their active string, which returned to'Melbourne after the Bandwick meeting. Jones, however, had on board the yearling colt by The Night Patrol from Stellaris, purchased by Mr; Kemball at the sales. When Lady Pam won the Albury Cup on Wednesday of last week, she was only fourth in the order of betting, starting at it good price, while her mate, Spear Lad, went out favourite. As recorded by the cables, the marc beat Spear Lad comfortably. She raced twice at the.A.J.C. meeting, but was not successful. She had 9.3 in the Tocal Handicap. aud' 9.9 in the Final Handicap, so she was well looked after. Jones will return within the month with several of the rising two-year-olds owned by Mr. Kemball that arc being prepared out at Trentbam. Mastertoil Biding Engagements. WORK AT TRENTHAM

Good Going on Outside (By "The Watcher.”) There was very little fast work at Trenthum yesterday morning, some of the trainers, in view of the threatening break in the weather, having galloped their charges fast the previous day. The outside of the course proper was open for fast work and provided excellent going. ... , . . Autopay, who is being kept going in view of Manawatu, galloped before breakfast and ran a half with Weatherstep in 52 l-ssec. The Sun shaped well in a schooling lesson over the pony hurdles. Araios ran four in 53see. After breakfast Flower ran six in Imin. 22sec., the last half in 54scc., and she did not appear to have been capable of much better. • Tobaccoland alid Black Mint, with good weights up, ran seven furlongs in Imin. 33scc.: the first half was_ run in 54scc. and the last half in 53scc. Tobaccoland was doing it better at the end. and he carried more weight. Historic did easy work on the sand Cimabue ran five well_in Imin. 3sec.. the last half in 50 l-ssec. He did not appear so sore as usual on pulling up. . .. . Traymela and Jadarino ran five in Imin. 5 2-ssec., but they were not after time. ' , , I’abu and Kilstar were schooled over three flights of hurdles. Palm, who looks bright and well, shaped very satisfactorily, but Kilstar ran off at the last two. Taken back to the last he jumped it very reluctantly. I’abu will make his debut as a jumper at Awapuni.

TELFORD ANGRY

Uninformed About Phar Lap

IT. R. Telford spent most of last Wednesday away from Bfaesidc, Mordialloc, his training establishment, which was formerly the headquarters of Phar Lap. and it was not until late in the evening when be returned that he heard of the death of the champion. He was stag; gered at the news (says a Melbourne writer). . , , . His emotion was outweighed by a Strong feeling of anger and resentment at the connections of the horse in the United States neglecting to send him a cable message announcing Phar Laps death or a confirming message. At first Telford refused to believe that the hor.se was dead and said that it was merely a cruel hoax or a rumour. When assured that the news was correct he said. “I’ve only got your word for that.” “I have had no word from America,” he continued bitterly. ‘I have four direct the horse and vet they have told me nothing about it. * I haven’t got a cable yet. I think it is extraordinary. I cannot say anything, because there’s nothing to say.” , u „ Telford received a message only the dav previously from T. Woodcock in which he stated that Phar Lap was in the best of health. On the same day Telford also received his share, or tnc stake won by Phar Lap in Mexico.
