CANADIAN TRADE

Revision After Ottawa

RATIFICATION DELAY

A cablegram from Canada in yesterdav’s “Dominion” to the effect that there was a belief in Ottawa that the trade treaty with New Zealand would not be ratified until after the Ottawa Conference, was referred to the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes. As far as the New Zealand Government was concerned, Mr. Forbes said, it was quite ready to introduce legislation to ratify the trade treaty at any day. However, there had been a holdup in the negotiations from the Canadian end, and this had been responsible for the trehty provisions remaining in abeyance. There was really no reason why the question should be left until after the Ottawa Conference, for provision had been inserted in the draft treaty for anv necessary revision that might be required after the Empire gathering had come to some agreement upon the tariff question.
