Wealthy Man Punished
London, April 7.
Arthur John Priest, aged 60, ex-rate collector of Wandsworth, sank on his knees and groaned when a sentence of three years’ penal servitude was Imposed on him for evading payment of income tax and super-tax to the extent of £15,000 in the last seventeen years. Priest’s salary was £4OO a year, Jjut his father had left him a number of properties, to which he continually added out of his savings. He had £38,000 in the bank when the proceedings began. He lived in a £5O-a-year house, though he admitted that his income rose in the past ten years from £OOOO to £13,300. Full arrears had been paid since the summonses were issued.
