A CRUEL HOAX
Stolen Lindbergh Baby LARGE RANSOM PAID Unfulfilled Agreement By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. (Rec. April 10, 6.45 p.m.) New York, April 9. Colonel C. Lindbergh revealed tonight that a cruel hoax had. been perpetrated on him by the kidnappers of his 20-months-old son. A ransom of 50,000 dollars was paid to them after proper identification upon an agreement to notify him of the exact whereabouts of the baby, but the child was not found at. the designated point. Several days were then permitted to elapse to give the abductors every opportunity to keep their promise. When hope was abandoned that they would fulfil their agreement, the aid of the Federal Treasury was sought to trace the banknotes used. A circular was sent by the Department to the banks of the country asking their tellers to be on the lookout for specified banknote numbers. This became known to-day, after which Colonel Lindbergh asked the Press to suppress the fact, but as in many cases it had already been published he issued his statement and reiterated his promise “not to try to injure” the kidnappers if only they would return the baby.
