LINERS IN PORT

Eight at Wellington There were more big overseas liners in port at Wellington yesterday than there have been for some time past, there being no fewer than eight, but of these five are to sail to-day, and a sixth at daybreak to-morrow. April is always one of the busiest months of the year on the Wellington waterfront, but this year during the last three months the wharves have been emptier than they have been for many years past, due to the falling away in the imports.. Services, both from England and America, have been curtailed, while the vessels still running have in very few cases carried full cargoes, which has meant that their stay at each port has been shorter than in previous years. Exports have been fully maintained, and to coin: with this one-sided cargo movement an unprecedented number of ships have this year come to New Zealand in ballast to load homewards. Of the eight vessels in port yesterday, the C. and 0. Line steamer Bort Wellington, the Federal steamers Cambridge and Cornwall, and the Shaw Savill steamer Maimoa are loading homewards. The New Zealand Shipping Company's motor-ship Orari, from Glasgow and Liverpool, and the A. and A. Line steamer Wirrall from New York and Gulf of Mexico ports are discharging, while the Canadian National steamer Canadian Cruiser is discharging cargo from Halifax and also loading for New York, Boston and Montreal. The remaining vessel, the Celtic Monarch called at Wellington yesterday to replenish her coal bunkers while eu route from Callao to Melbourne. The Port Wellington, Celtic Monarch, Maimoa, Wirral and Canadian Cruiser will leave to-day, the Cambridge at daybreak to-morrow, and the Orari and Cornwall on Wednesday.
