£3OO a Week to Begging A playwright and a former actor who is stated to have earned £3(X) a week nt one time was charged at a London Court lately with street begging. He was Sidney Bowkett, aged 66, the. author of the successful plays, “Lucky Miss Denn” and “Superior Miss Bellender.” Some years ago he find a serious illness. The constable who arrested Bowkett said~that lie knew him twelve years ago. when he was in much better eireuinstances. He had been stage manager nt the Winter Garden Theatre. Bowkett. told the magistrate that lie had a half-promise from a film producer that one of bis plays would be filmed, and if that were done he would be all right again. The magistrate said he knew that Bowket.t hnd once been in cdod circumstances. He bound him over, and advised him to enter an institution.
Pedal bieyules arc coming into favour again. It is estimated that there are 7,000,000 cyclists in Britain to-day, and that this year will see another million added to this number.
