THE RACING WORLD

CHOPIN AGAIN Big Race at Hastings SPRINT TO TAI AO Hunting Cry’s Memorial (By Telegraph.—From “I’oneke.”) Hastings, April 9. The racing at Hastings to-day was held in oppressive heat. Rain which fell during the week had improved the course. The gathering was well attended, and the totalisator turnover was £7835/10/-, very little less than that (£7911/10/-) of the previous Saturday. Favourites had a good day, returning five first dividends and one second. The Ormond Memorial was won easily by Hunting Cry. Chopin scored in the President’s Handicap, and Tai Ao in the open sprint. . Goshawk Wins. Royal Lineage was a good favourite for the Karamu Highweight Handicap, but an indifferent run spoilt his chance. Gold Ruler led to the straight, where Goshawk ran through from the back, and in the last furlong completely outstayed the pacemakers and won by two lengths and a half, going away. San Quex was four lengths back fourth, and Royal Lineage, Manuiri and Hard Gold next. > Payment of the dividends was held up a considerable time pending the result if an inquiry into the running of Goshawk, who had been badly beaten a week previously.' However, no action was taken and the dividends were paid according to the judge’s plaeings. Poor Contest. The Tomoana Electric Handicap was never more than a three-horse race. Lady Gain whipped round when the tapes were released and Luna Lux and Joe cannoned soon after the start. Hunting Moss went to the front, but Gay Lass was going well in second position. Gay Lass ran to the front before entering the straight. Hard ridden, Hunting Moss could make no impression on Gay Lass, who won by two lengths. Chatterton was a poor third, six lengths away, and Joe was a long way back fourth. Like Goshawk, the winner belongs to J. M. Cameron. She is a four-year-old mare by Lord Quex from Mountain Lass. Speed Too Good. Form pointed strongly to Speed in the Juvenile Handicap. He went out favourite and won decisively. Speed began smartly from No; 8 at the barrier and was soon in front. Margaret Rose ran up to him and accompanied him to the straight, where Princess Bell, who had lain handy all the way. challenged. Princess Bell finished well, but could not get to Speed, who stayed on solidly and won by a length. Margaret Rose, who was third, was two lengths away. Freeze was fourth, and Aesculns, Blue Boy and Foreign Queen were together next. Aesculus was never a possibility. Ormond Memorial. Hunting Cry, backed as unbeatable, won the J. D. Ormond Memorial attractively.

He trailed Chrysology to the straight, and then made his run on the outside. Chrysology stuck to his task well, but had no chance with the favourite, who won by a length. Lady Spy was four lengths away third and the only other runner was Jenny Diver. Chief Handicap. Malahat and Chopin carried more than half the money invested on the President’s Handicap. Pcwa and Statuary made the early running from Malahat, who drifted back after passing the six-furlong post and was last with three furlongs to go. Entering the straight, Primax showed up on the outer, but covered rather much ground on the turn. Chopin soon took definite command, finishing gamely to win by a couple of lengths from Primax, who was only a head in front of Pcwa, with Malahat a close fourth. Malahat would have been a lot harder to beat if he had not been allowed to drift. Favourite’s Victory. Fondle scored convincingly in the Akitio High-weight Handicap, for which she was backed to favouritism and odds-on. Lady Makere’s speed enabled her to make the early running, while Fondle dropped to the rear. Fondle ran round the field and joined Lady Makere three furlongs from home. From the straight entrance she ran on strongly to win very easily by two lengths from Anemometer, who, though ridden vigorously, could make no impression on the winner. San Quex was a moderate third, Lady Makere was fourth, and Brown Sugar last. All the Way. An end-to-end victory was scored by Royal Hunting in the Twyford Handicap. The winner paid one of the shortest prices of the meeting. Kinross tackled the ■winner in the straight, but could not head him off, Royal Hunting winning by half a length. False Scent was two lengths away third. Court. Lady fourth, then Hunting Moss and Monarchy. Tai Ao Again. Tai Ao continued his winning run by leading home the field in the Okawa Handicap, the open sprint. Kaihoro and Imperial Fame led to the straight from Tai Ao, Great Charter and Moa Bird. Imperial Fame went to the lead when the field straightened up for the run to the winning post, but Tai Ao ran him down and won well by a couple of lengths. Kaihoro stuck on fairly well and finished third, another two lengths away. Great Chartey was fourth, then Teller'and Cuticle. EMINENT BRILLIANT Gallops Good 7 Furlongs WORK AT TRENTHAM Trcntham tracks have been greatly improved by rain, and the outside of the course proper provided perfect going for fast work on Saturday; in fact, it was extremely fast. Sir I’onibal sprinted well over four furlongs with Sailing in 481 sec„ and has improved with his Easter racing. Sailing also.went well. Uhnabus hit out over six furlongs at a good pace, but lie was sore on pulling up. Oue of the best gallops was done by Eminent, who ran seven in 1.28. Eminent also went well on Tuesday, and has apparently come on well since Wairarapa. Joie de Vai, with a good weight up, ran six in 1.16.}, and did it well. Clangor and Traynicla ran the last half of live in 49 l-ssec. Clangor is doing it the better, but Traynicla is coming on nicely. Tobaccoland worked with Black Mint over six in 1.171. As usual, he carried a good weight, and now that the tracks have become soft, he should run to his better form. Black Mint gave him several lengths start, and had made up a lot ot the ground at the finish of the gallop. Foghorn was doing it better than Capetown at the end of seven in 1.31. Lyrical and Miss Hastings took 1.32 2-5. Lyrical looks very fit, and her loss ot form at Wairarapa is puzzling. Marjoram finished his work with a short sprint, and appears to be standing up to it all right. Historic did his work on the plough. He has done plenty lately, but his tasks have not included any sliarpeuing-up sprints. Kilstar. The Sun, and Bahn are continuing their hurdling education, being put over the pony obstacles. St. Koger has been shod, and will probably be put on the active list again shortly. MASTERTON REHANDICAPS Kcbandicaps for the Mnsterton meeting have been declared by Mr. H. Coyle as follow:— Masterton Gold Cup.—Chopin. 8.0. Flying Handicap.—Tai Ao. 8.7. Lausdowna Handicap.—Tai Ao, 10.10.

SEVEN ON END Tai Ao Brilliant Galloper NOTES AND COMMENTS (By ‘'The Watcher.”) Acceptances for the first day of the Mastertou Kacing Club’s autumn meeting. to be held on Friday and Saturday next, will close to-night nt 0 o'clock. Acceptances for the autumn meeting of the Alanawatu Kacing Club, to be held on Wednesday and Thursday of next week, will close on Thursday at 0 p.m. Seven on End. Tai Ao has now won seven races on end, and eight out of his last nine starts, lie beat one or two fair class sprinters at Hastings on Saturday -with case, and is one of the best httek graduates we have seen for some time. Mr. Lowry’s Trip. Mr. T. H. Lowry, who left for Vancouver from Auckland last week, had intended his trip to see Phar Lap nice in America. The death of the champion will deprive him of one of the pleasures of his holiday. Hunting Cry to Spell. Hunting Cry scored a comlortable win in the Ormond Cup. The opposition was not strong, but the brown gelding showed that he is in something like lus best form. He pulled up sore, and as no engagements were made for him at Manawatu, Mr. T. Fraser has decided to give him a spell. Hunting Cry has won £BB3O in stakes. This Week’s Kacing. The To Kuiti meeting will be , concluded to-day, and on Friday and Saturday there will be racing at Masterton. On Saturday the Karamea Kacing Club will hold a non-totalisator meeting. Rational 11. Rational IL was nominated lor the Awaptini Gold Cup under the belief that it was a handicap and not the established weight-for-agc event, formerly known as the Awapuni Gold Cup. He is, however, in the big handicap ou the first day with 7.7, and has lib more over a mile aud a quarter at Masterton, so his trip to the two meetings is likely to be undertaken. Admiral Drake in Sydney Cup. T. Webster, rider of Admiral Drake in the Sydney Cup, said in tin interview with a representative of the ’’Sydney Morning Herald” that his mount pulled very hard all the way. When asked if he thought he had the race within his keeping at the trim, Webster replied in the negative. “As a matter of fact,” he added. “I thought we wore well beaten. It was only Admiral Drake’s bulldog nature that caused him to go so close.” The Croupier Case. It is reported from Auckland that the date of hearing of legal action to determine the ownership of the racehorse Croupier has been fixed. The case will be heard in the Supreme Court nt Auckland on April 19 and 20. It will be recalled that Croupier, after racing in the colours of Air. J. J. Corry in the Stead Cup at Riccarton in November, was dramatically seized after the race by representatives of the Paterson Brothers. Croupier has not raced since, but he has been in work at Ellerslie for some time. Phar Lap’s Head. On Wednesday when the news reached Auckland of the death of Phar Lap, the Mayor, Air. G. W. Hutchinson, sent a cablegram to the part-owner, Mr. Davis, asking whether it would be possible for the bead of the horse to be sent to Auckland to be placed in the War Afemorial Museum alongside that of Carbine. No reply has yet been received by Mr. Hutchinson. A further suggestion has been made that the head be placed in the Dominion Museum at Wellington. Air. Hutchinson proposes to approach the council of the Auckland Institute with a request that they should allow Carbine’s head to be exhibited with that of Phar Lap in the four chief centres. Sagittarius Destroyed. A IVest Coast report states that the eight-year-old Sagittarius is to be destroyed. He was one of the first of the progeny of Arrowsmith to race, and before he went to the AVest Coast, more than two years ago, he was a useful performer on Canterbury tracks, being trained by A. AlcAulay at Riccarton. ENGLISH RACING The Newbury Cup (Kec. April 10, 5.5 p.m.). London, April 9. The following was the result of the NEWBURY SPRING CUP. 1 mile. MEETING ABANDONED Whangarei Autumn Fixture By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wiiangaroi. April 9. Owing to its financial position, and on account of its failure to obtain Government assistance, the Whangarei Racing Club has decided that it cannot take the risk of holding its autumn meeting. At a meeting of the committee to-day it was decided to abandon the fixture.
