In ideal weather, Buy of Plenty commenced a Hawke Cup challenge match against South Auckland to-day. The visitors made a poor showing in their first innings, the total reaching only 59. Wellington v. Manawatu Dominion Special Service Palmerston North, March 26. The cricket match between Wellington and Manawatu elevens, which was commenced on Good Friday, was concluded to-day, and resulted in a drawn game. Manawatu in its first innings made 191 runs. When stumps were drawn on Good Friday, Wellington had only knocked up 85 runs for the loss of eight wickets. Wellington continued its first innings to-day, the • innings closing for 101 runs. Manawatu batted well in its second stand at the wickets for 237 runs. Robertson (83 not out) was the best scorer. Other high scorers were:—O’Keefe, 38; Hollier, 36; Norris. 22; and Berquist, 20. Bowling for Wellington. Bird took three wickets for 3S runs; Hair, three for 35; O’Neill, two for 78; and Wareham. one for 8. Wellington was more successful in its second innings than in its first, and when stumps were drawn had 216 runs for the loss of four wickets. Cleave, one of the opening batsmen, carried his bat for 104, and when stumps were drawn was playing havoc with the Manawatu bowling. Wareham batted consistently and had reached 61 when he was stumped by Rose, after stepping out of his crease to hit a slow ball. Duff, who went in a few minutes before the finish, was hitting well, and had made eight runs when the game closed.

STOP OUT BEATS KILBIRNIE Sandholm Does “Hat” Trick In a one-day match at Kelburn Park on Saturday, Stop Out defeated Kilbirnie by five wickets, Kilbirnie totalled 224, Wrigley passing the half-century. Samlholin was in brilliant form with the ball,, his tally being seven wickets for 47, including the hat trick. The Stop Out players nil found the Kilbirnie bowling to their liking. Bright batting was shown by M. Liddicoat. Mason, R. Liddicoat, Mclvor, and Dunn, Rooke hit two sixes and seven fours; M. Liddicoat two sixes and six fours; and R. Liddicoat, one six and five fours.

COLTS BEAT VETERANS

Interesting Finish of Match A team of Wellington Colts beat a team of Veterans, prist players, and a few senior batsmen, by 13 runs, at the Basin Reserve on Saturday. The match was particularly interesting in the closing stages, when with nine wickets down, Colts required three runs to pass the Veterans’ total of 224. The task of winning the match fell to Prince, last man, who drove to the boundary for 4 Partnered ably by Burkett, Prince continued, but after hitting the only 6 of the day, was stumped by Clark. The Colts total reached 237. The Veterans, with few exceptions, found the bowling too good. W. Monkhouse hit freely, and scored 106, with drives all round the wicket. B. Mabin (30), and C. S. Dempster (48), were the only other batsmen to make a good score. A feature of the innings was the bowling of Bowkett, who took six wickets for 60 From the start of the Colts’ innings, the batting was patchy. A keenly-contested two-day match between a Wellington Mercantile League representative side and Mental Hospital, concluded on Saturday in favour of Hospital, by four wickets, with five minutes to spare. Batting first, the League put on 267. Hospital was dismissed for 135 in the first innings. The League representatives failed to withstand the accurate bowling of 'Ell and Clark in their second innings, and were dismissed for 78. Requiring 211 to win, Hospital played with its back to the wall, and the winning hit, a sixer, was scored with five minutes to spare. J. Ell, the junior representative, bowled and batted brilliantly for the winners, and his efforts were the deciding factor in the game. MATCH AT WANGANUI Wellington Mercantile League Dominion Special Service. Wanganui, March 26. Taking the first, strike against a Wanganui representative cricket team on Cook's Gardens this morning, Wellington Mercantile League made 176 in the first innipgs. At the call of time Wanganui had made 114 for the loss of four wickets. For Wellington W. F. McKenzie topped the score with 32, followed by T. Murphy 29, J. Brough 28, and A. Martin 27. Bowlin"- for Wanganui C. Smith took four wickets for 26 runs; E. Gee one for none, and Wood three for 31. . Gee was top seorer lor Wanganui with an uncompleted total of 61 not out. Wild made 26 not out. Hassell took one wicket for 6 runs, Pickering two for 19, and Roberts one for 25. The match will be continued on Monday. TRAINING COLLEGES GAME Auckland v.
