Economy Commission’s Proposals INSTITUTE PROTESTS At the annual meeting of the Wellington branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute the following resolutions protesting against the proposed economies in. education were adopted. , “That the New Zealand Educational Institute enters an emphatic protest against the personnel of the committee not including a representative of education. “That this institute is opposed to centralisation of control of education and that it favours unification of control as outlined in the Parliamentary Recess Committee’s report. “That the attention of the Government be drawn to the disparity’ of sacrifice demanded from the primary service as compared with that of the post-primary service. • . ... “That if deductions must be made from the emoluments of those in the education service such deductions be spread over the whole education service in accordance with the principle of equality of sacrifice. “That strong protest be made against the iniquitous recommendations of the Economy Committee regarding sectional reductions in teachers’ salaries, and that a sub-committee be appointed to bring forward reasons why these reductions should not be made. “That the attack upon handwork: in the schools be deplored as setting back the bands of the clock—educationally. — there being many children for whose intellectual development manual work is essential. “That protest be made against the reductions in allowances to school committees and that the institute co-operate with the school committees in their efforts to oppose the reduction. “That if there .is any economy to be made in the cost of training colleges the reductions should be equally distributed over the four colleges according to the reduction in students. “That the cut imposed upon training college students be no greater than that imposed upon any other section of the service, and that protest be made against the proposal to break faith, with the students at present in training. “That the. inspectorate be amalgamated and reduced by half. “That the external proficiency examination be abolished in favour of the scheme recommended by the Parliamentary Recess Education Committee. “That this branch of the N.Z.E.T. protests against a further salary cut, believing that this is not.in the best interests of the country.”
