He it wa swlio. in February, 11)15, when in command of the 500-ton coasting steamer Thordis, rammed and sank a German U-boat in the Channel off Beachy Head. By so doing he won the £5OO which had been offered by “The Syren and Shipping” for the first unarmed British merchant vessel to destroy an enemy submarine, together with a similar amount subsequently offered by Mr. Stephen Scrope, of Harrogate, and smaller sums by other patriotic gentlemen. In those days the U-boat menace was just beginning to be realised, and in addition to netunlly sending to the bottom a potential commerce raider, Captain Bell demonstrated in no uncertain fashion that British seamen were still capable of tackling any foe, with the best means at their command, as they had been in past centuries.

AUSTRALIAN TRADE Union Cargo Servica The Gabriella is scheduled to leave Sydney to-morrow for Newcastle and Wanganui. The Kalingo, from Newcastle, is due at Napier on Wednesday; thence to Gisborne. She will load at Adelaide and Melbourne in April for Auckland and Napier. The Kaponga left Greymouth on Friday for Sydney, Brisbane, Newcastle and Wellington. The Karepo, from Adelaide and Melbourne, was scheduled to leave New Plymouth last Saturday for Auckland, Wellington and Tarakohe. , The Karetu was due to leave Kukualofa on Friday last for Auckland, Newcastle, Sydney, Fiji, Tonga and Auckland. The Kiwitea will leave Newcastle on Wednesday for Wellington (Miramar). The Narbada is to leave Calcutta early in April for Rangoon. Penang, Singapore, Samarang, Auckland,, Wellington. Lyttelton and Dunedin. The Wnikouaiti is to leave Bluff tomorrow for Sydney, Newcastle, Sydney, Hobart, Bluff, Duuediu, Lyttelton, and Timaru. The Wainui left Wellington on Saturday for Bluff and Melbourne. She will leave the. latter port on April 6 for Bluff, Dunedin, Lyttelton and Wellington. MARAMA' FROM. SYDNEY Passengers and Mails The Union Company’s intercolonial steamer Mararna, which left Sydney last Thursday with.passengers and mails for New Zealand, is due in the stream at Wellington about 7 a.m. to-day. After pratique has been granted she will berth at Queen’s Wharf, No 1 south, by 8 o’clock. BRITISH SHIPBUILDING Lowest for Forty-three Years The annual summary of the mercantile shipbuilding of the world in 1931, issued last month by “Lloyd's Register,” completes the tale of profound depression, whose essential features had already been indicated by past quarterly returns of tonnage launched and work begun. During 1931 the output of British yards amounted to 502,487 tons, comprising 98 steamers of 269,954 tons, 37 motor-ships of 227,910 tons, and 13 barges of 4623 tons. This production represents a decrease of 976,076 tons as compared with that for 1930, and is the lowest recorded since the first issue in 1888 of “Lloyd’s Register” shipbuilding returns. The world output in 1931 amounted to 1,617,115 tons, a decrease of 1,272,357 tons as compared with 1930. The figure for the past year is the lowest recorded since 1909, with the single exception of the war year 1915.

The Gael, from Lyttelton, is due tomorrow. She will sail later in the day for Hokitika. The Kohi will sail to-morrow for Nelson and bays. The Gale is due from Wanganui on Wednesday, and will sail again the same day for Lyttelton, Dunedin, Oamaru and Timaru, The Orepuki is due from southern ports on Thursday, and will sail Inter in the day for Picton and Wanganui. The Storm is expected next Saturday from the south,. and will sail again the same day for Wanganui. The Kaimai left on Saturday for Greymouth to load for Wellington. The Kaimiro will leave to-morrow for Napier and Auckland. The Kini arrived from Greymouth yesterday and will sail/to-morrow for Gisborne. The Komata, which arrived last night from Westport. wiN sail on the return trin on Wednesday. The New Zealand Shipping Co.’s Ruahine arrived at Wellington from Auckland on Saturday afternoon to complete discharge of her London cargo, and to begin her Homeward loading. She is berthed at the Pipitea Wharf. > She is timed to sail again .about Thursday for Bluff. Timaru. Lyttelton and Wellington. sailing finally from this port on April 23 for London via the Panama Canal. PORT VICTOR FOR LONDON. The Commonwealth nnd Dominion Line steamer Port Victor is due at Opun from Australia on April 11 for Homeward loading. The vessel will also load at Gisborne.'Napier. Lyttelton and Wellington. from which port she will be dispatched finally on April 27. CANADIAN SCOTTISH AT NEW YORK. The Canadian Scottish, which left Dunedin on February 11 for New York, Boston and Halifax, arrived at New York last Monday. THE CANADIAN TRANSPORTER. The Canadian Transporter, which left Dunedin on January 11 for New York, Boston, and Halifax, via Australia, arrived at New York on March 19 and sailed on the following day. arriving nt Boston last Monday, leaving there the same day. CABLE SHIP RECORDER. The cable steamer Recorder, formerly the Iris, sailed from Auckland on Thursdav to carrv out the transfer of the Pacific Cable Board’s Sydney line from Wellington to Auckland. UNION ROYAL MAIL LINE. The Monowai, from San Francisco, arrived at Papeete on Saturday. She is due at Rarotonga to-day, Wellington on April 4, and Sydney on April 9.
