Phar Lap and Depression
Sir, —Doubtless you and your thousands of readers are aware that New Zealand is in the throes of a depression, and, further, that in a small gambling resort in Mexico a horse race has been run and won. Many people may not realise how important this race was compared with the depression. Our Prime Minister was not one of these, and to show his interest he cheerfully spent over £4 of the taxpayers’ money to send a cable of congratulation. The cable with address contains more than 40 words at 2/04 each (Government rate), and yet the public works are being made into relief works, the Economy Commission recommends a 10 per cent, cut and economics amounting to millions—what irony! Economise! Economise! is the cry and yet the Prime Minister can spend over £4 on a cable to a racehorse owner! Men and women may starve, but our racehorses must be congratulated at the expense of the people.—l am. etc., “10 PER CENT. CUT.” Wellington, March 22.
