About People and Events TAX EXEMPTION The amount paid to the Unemployment Fund in wages tax is exempted from income tax for the Consolidated Fund, a Land and Income Tax Department official explained to a reporter last week. A case quoted was that of a man earning £4OO. Under the new tax he would pay £2O a year unemployment tax. This, the reporter was told, comes into the same category as premium on a life insurance policy. It is exempted from income tax. In this case the man would pay Income tax on the taxable balance of the remaining £3BO, assuming that he had no other exemptions. Umpire Injured. Putting his foot through a plateglass window in Parish Street, Robert Cecil Rutledge, seaman, aged 21, caused damage estimated at £b/o/-. This he was ordered by justices of the peace in the Police Court on Saturday, to make good within two months. On a charge of drunkenness, he was fined 10/-.

Bursary Award. . At the last, meeting ol the Victoria College Council, Lady Stout’s bursary was awarded to Miss Margaret Gibbs. As Miss Gibbs had to go to Palmerston North, and the conditions of the bursary are that the holder must work at Vlctorfa College, the council lias adopted the recommendation of the Professorial Board that (lie bursary be awarded to Miss Julia Dunn.

Severely Scalded. One of three boys who were camping together at. Gollan's Valley stepped into a tin of boiling water on Saturday evening and was severely scalded on the left leg. The injured boy was C. Honore. of 26 Imperial Terrace, Kilbirnie. aged 15. He was brought over the hills yesterday to Muritai and was taken in the afternoon by the Free Ambulance to hospital. His leg was scalded almost to the knee, although bis foot had been saved to some degree by his boot.

Mishap YVliitc Bathing. YVhilc bathing yesterday morning at Tiiuherenikau, Miss J. Carr, of 320 the Terrace, YVellington, cut her right foot severely on some sharp object under the water. She was taken by the Free Ambulance from the Public Works camp. Kaitokc. to hospital.

Radio for Emergencies. A portable radio transmitter will be operated from the Khandallah reserve at 2 o’clock this afternoon by members of the New Zealand Society of Amateur Radio Transmitters. Members of the Short-wave Club will arrange for listeners to report on the tests. The demonstration is intended as a reproduction of conditions which would obtain in the event of earthquakes causing Interruption of telegraph services.
