HUNTING ACCIDENT
Young Man Shot CHASING A HARE Dominion Special Service Masterton, December 14. As the result of an unusual shooting accident, a Martinborough youth, Oswald McAlpine, aged 18 years, is in hospital in a critical condition. McAlpine was shooting at Whaturaiigi, Palliser Bay, yesterday in company with three other Martinborough residents, his brother Eric and Messrs. Everndcn and Peters. At about 6.45 p.m. Mr. Peters wounded a hare, and he and McAlpine chased it. McAlpine, in attempting to club the hare, struck the ground with the butt of his rifle. The rifle went off, and he received the bullet in the abdomen. He was immediately taken into Martinborough, 27 miles away, where an operation was performed. His condition tonight was still serious.
