RED CROSS WORK

Awards' Presented to Students

SEPARATE N.Z. SOCIETY

As the. number present was too great to be accommodated in the Concert Chamber, an' adjournment had to he made to the Town Hall for the presentation last evening of awards to students who have gained proficiency >n Red Cross first aid, hygiene, sanitation, and home nursing. The chairman, Hon. Dr. W. E. Collins, C.M.G., said the function had been postponed from last week owing to the death of Sir John Luke, and he wished to send from those present a letter of sympathy to Lady Luke, who had always taken such an interest' in Red Cross matters.

It was interesting to know, he proceeded, that there were 23 million members of Red Cross societies in the world belonging to 57 different countries.. Hitherto those in New Zealand had been associated with the British Red Cross Society, but now they desired to have a Red Cross Society of their own, so that New Zealand could be represented at the Red Cross League‘in Paris by its own quota. The object was to carry out clause 25 of the League of Nations constitution, which was to preserve health,,, mitigate suffering, and prevent disease, irrespective of country, colour, or. creed. There had been a good deal of suffering here among returned soldiers, and much money Had been subscribed to cope with it, but he was sorry to say that many of these men had got better, given up their pensions, and then had come back on the society’s hands. The money was diminishing, and still there were many returned men to be looked after. When any disaster occurred the Red Cross was expected to give relief at once, and on the occasion of the Hawke’s Bay earthquake it had risen to the occasion, and had sent a skilled personnel and provisions to the scene. It had. also raised £5542 for the relief of sufferers in the district. Up to the present time £4921 had been expended, leaving something still in hand. With the high standard of knowledge acquired from the lectures given during the year they had been able to turn out a number of V.A.D.’s. who hud done excellent work, and who were always prepared to act when called upon. Unselfish Organisation. - Mr. R. A. Wright, M.P., mentioned the good work done by the Red Cross Society for the blind people in Wellington. It was an unselfish organisation. Selfishness was the root of all the trouble in the world—even the unemployment trouble...was caused by the selfishness of the nations. There was any amount of food in the world, but each nation built up barriers so that others who needed it could not secure it. The hope ahead was that they would build up races of people who would not be quite so selfish. Value of Training. Dr. T. McKibbin, Director of Public Hygiene,'paid a tribute to the medicalmen, officers, and sisters, who undertook the training work in connection with the' Wellington section of the society.' It only needed an emergency to show the value of the continuity of the work. He advocated the setting up of branches of the society so that . there would be people always ready to render first aid and to carry out doctors’ instructions. Bright Interlude. An enjoyable programme was submitted by the Junior Red Cross members as follows: —Song, “Junior Red Cross Flag,” lan and Jim Galloway and the Northland Circle; piano solo, Ngaire Highet, Hataitai School; dance, Norma Thornton and Dorothy Palmer, Wilford School, Pctone; recitation, “Touch of ’Flu,” Maisie Peene, Petone Technical; duet, “Barcarolle,” from “Tales of Hoffmann," Jim and lan Galloway; skipping, .
