STOWAWAYS FINED

Brought Back from Panama Two stowaways who were brought back to New Zealand by the Kotorua, which arrived at Wellington from London and Southampton, via the Panama Canal on Sunday, were each fined £5 by Mr. W. H. Woodward, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday. Accused were Edward Lennister, aged IS, and David Scott, aged 23. Sub-Inspector Lopdell said that the two stowed away on the Kent, which left Auckland on October 22 for London. They were landed at Panama and placed on board the Rotorua when she passed through the Canal. Accused, who were natives of England, had been out of work in New Zealand and had stowed away with a view to returning to the Homeland. A representative of the New Zealand Shipping Company said that the company had been put to inconvenience and expense through having the accused on the Rotorua., The fares had not been paid. The Magistrate: I am afraid there is little chance of getting money out of them. I cannot order them to reimburse you. I can only impose a fine or send them to gaol. “We did six days in gaol at Panama,” one of the accused replied when asked if they had anything to say. Default of payment of the fine was fixed at fourteen days’ imprisonment.
