RAROTONGAN CHIEF
Visitor to Dominion KEEN AGRICULTURIST One of the outstanding figures in the Polynesian world, Chief Makea Tinerau, of Rarotonga, arrived- in Wellington yesterday by the Monowai. He intends spending some time in New Zealand, and will probably, visit Rotorua in company with Sir Aplrana Ngata, who will introduce him to his Excellency the Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe. • -
Chief Makea Tinerau is described as the most powerful “Ariki” in the
Cook Islands. The Makea family has always been noted for its loyalty to the British Government, its hospitality to distinguished visitors, and its entertainment of officers and men on visiting warships. Makea is one of the foremost native planters, and is keenly interested in agriculture, recognising that the welfare of his people largely depends on their adopting up-to-date methods in the cultivation, packing, and marketing of their commercial products.
