THE RACING WORLD

RIDER FOR SPEARFUL Manawatu Cup Engagement NOTES AND COMMENTS (By “The Watcher.”) Acceptances for the first day of the Mahayfatu Hacing Club’s summer meeting/ to be held on December 26, 2S and 29, will close on Friday at 9 p.m. Acceptances for the summer meeting of the Waipukurau Jockey Club on Boxing Day will close on Thursday at 8 p.m. At Dannevirke to-morrow the first race will take place at 12.30. Convenient train arrangements have been made, and good fields are promised. The connections of the New Zealand Cuo winner Spearful at Woodville were looking for a ridel; for their gelding for his Manawatu Cup engagement. Nothing definite was arrived at. E. Burgess was mentioned as likely to be put up. The Acre gelding Pgtearoa has reached aged class without getting out of' hack class. He is not likely to improve, but his Feilding and Woodville form showed him to be in good order at present, and he may win one during the holidays., ■ ■ Adelphi showed improvement during the course of the Woodville meeting, and should pay. his way here before the Christmas and New Year racing is finished. ' Golden Shadow, in form, is one of our speediest hacks, but he has recently raced below form. He looks well, however, and may not be long iu doing better. j. - Aston’s next up will"be at Awapuni. The Irish-bred gelding was never iu better form than he is at present. Easterly ran one good race at Levin, but at Feilding and Woodville she was never dangerous. This mare should not be discarded. A different story will be told on a soft track.' Teels, over whom there was trouble at Waipa on Saturday, is a sister to the last Auckland Cup winner, Motere. She won at her last start as a two-year-old, but when raced last October failed to show up. Should Win a Handicap. Princess Bell, who ran second to'Pillow Fight at Woodville, will probably do her holiday racing at Auckland. Her showing was encouraging enough to warrant the trip, for handicaps at least. Mr. 11. Holden had bad luck with his other youngster, Flamingo, who was left at the post the second day and took no part in the race. .A Sporting Action. A sporting action went down to the : credit of- Mr- Frank Ormond at Woodville last week. When Journet gave his circus exhibition prior to the Novice Stakes on the second day, , which finally resulted in him being withdrawn from the race, it officially labelled him a nonstarter. Mr. Ormond immediately got into touch with the secretary and stated that the' riding fee. which would have been refunded in the ordinary course, was to be paid tb Ellis; just as if he had ridden him in the race. ; . ,

Gold Day Returning. > Gold Day and his owner and trainer are expected back in Auckland from Sydney before Christmas. The Day Comet-r-Poi gelding appears to have been rather highly assessed during his Australian campaign, but it is quite on the cards tfaat he will make amends for his failures when raced again in New Zealand. New Zealand-bred Winner. The Three and Four-year-old Handicap at Warwick Farm on December 3 was won by Tea Fight, a four-year-old gelding by Tea Tray from Fair Fight, dam of Fair Exchange and No Favours. He started at good double figures and was heavily supported away from the course, the race proving one of the most expensive of recent years to many district operators. Koatanui Yearlings. The well-known Wanganui breeder, Mr. G. M. Currie, regards his present crop of 'yearlings as the best he has raised, and he stated recently that in normal times they would have made a new record for his stud. The draft includes seven colts aud four fillies by Limond and two colts and one filly by Pornbal. The Limond colts include youngsters from the dams of Veilmond, Agrion, Mask and Thespian, while the fillies include sisty to Honour. Craigavon Returns. The Australian-bred Craigavon, who was imported in 1929 by F. D. Jones, has returned to the tracks after a spell of several months, which has improved him greatly. He started seven times last season without getting a place, a result with which it. was difficult to reconcile his private essays, and after the Banks Peninsula meeting in March he was turned out. Poor Relations. Chief Star, who has been a competitor in. recent maiden events in the North Island,- is a half-sister (by Chief Ruler) to Star Stranger, one ■ of the best handicap performers of his day. So far, however, Chief Star has given no indication of being even a moderate, and as she is four years old the outlook for her is not brigh.t Records Appear Safe. With a sharp curtailment in prize money both in Australia and New Zealand, it would seem quite safe to offer the prediction that existing records under several'headings are likely to stand for some time to come, especially the 126,794 won by I’harLap when three years old. As announced some time ago, the added money of the Australian Jockey Club’s Derby has been reduced from £BOOO to £5OOO, and, with other stakes, affected, a three-year-old would require to contest many more than the 20 races' that formed Phar Lap’s record at the stage named to win anything approaching the same sum. In the season of 1927-28 Trivalve at three years old won £26,320,! arid , in, the following season Strcphou’s windings amounted to £17,805. From a Good Family. Beacon Fire, who won a hack race on each day of the Woodville meeting,, made a favourable impression at Trentham in October, and though he did not race up to expectations in some of! his races at Riccarton, his form there was good. His Woodville form suggests that; h; will have to be reckoned with in hack events at Auckland, where,he will! do his holiday racing. Beacon Fire is a three-year-old by Lackham from Mountain Signal, by Mduntain Knight from Signal March by Bezonian from Pilgrim’s March, a Pilgrim’s Progress ■ mare tracing back to imported Miss Kate. It is a family which has produced a number of good-class performers, and Beacon Fire ’may be found winning middle distance handicaps before the end'of the season. Appearances Deceptive.

The Flying ■ Prince case at Taumaru-i nui, where Gray escaped an inquiry dead-heating, reminds one of the story of the steward who viewed a race from the home lurn. The field came round,' and he noticed a rider take a long and: strong pull at his mount. The stew-! ard was back in the birdcage almost as'i soon as the horses, and he went up to! his brother stewards and said, “Put up: so and so, put up so and so. Jt is the strongest thing I've ever seen.” “What's .the .matter with you?” said a brother steward. “He's won.” The Old Argument. ■ ; Attempts to estimate the standard of, form of racehorses separated by a long! stretch of years are never very satis-i factory, for racing conditions may have; been altered in a very marked manner. l Still, it is always interesting to learn; the opinions held ■by those who, by aj well-grounded knowledge of racing and of; the thoroughbred family, are qualified to speak on the subject. Although opiu-; ions may be widely at variance, that fact’ only serves to add further interest to: the views expressed. Mr. A. B. (“Banjo”): Patterson can be well cited among thosewho bold pronounced views in favour o£j the horses of the present day, and, writing in the Sydney “Mail” recently,] he said: "In my opinion the arrival in: this country of the stallions Valais, Magpie and Spearhead raised-the class of our horses at least 40 per cent. The old-, time horses were a pretty rough lot, and,J while there is no denying that what Carbine and Abercorn did to the others was, 'a shame,’ they might not hare done it' to the horses of a later date. If Carbine and Abercorn had been started against such horses as Heroic, Windbag, Man-, fred, and Spearfelt., what would have: happened? Well, the old-timer will tell you that Carbine and Abercorn would hare walked in on the bit, blit, having seen them all race,'! am of the opinion that Carbine and Abercorn would not 1 have run first, second, third, nor fourth. ’ Perhaps lam wrong—one can so easily i be wrong about gorses.”' ; TARANAKI RACES King’s Archer Rehandicapped i Mr. H. Coyle has rehandicapped King’s! Archer at. 8.13 in the Atiawa Hack Handicap, to be run at the Taranaki Racing Club’s Christmas meeting,
