Civic Affairs
Sir, —“The Dominion” frequently publishes letters from disgruntled ratepayers who discuss civic affairs from various angles. In your paper to-day you publish a letter from a correspondent, who, in some respects, breaks new ground. He suggests that a deal of our troubles in the conduct of our civic affairs can be traced to the apathy of councillors and citizens. lam inclined to think that he is right. It might appear, too, that the various ratepayers’ associations have not been working on the right lines. However, I can bear out your correspondent’s statement that his Worship the Mayor made a pre-election promise that he would see that complete and accurate costs would be given to ratepayers; I was at the meeting when the matter was discussed. Now, I suggest that we test the matter. Will his Worship supply “The Dominion,” for publication, with the detailed cost of the convenience recently erected at the entrance to the Karori tunnel? It is not suggested, of course, that the cost was too high. While on the question of this building, would it be possible to find out if it is a fact that it has been placed just where the roadway will be when eventually the road is straightened to allow a clear run from the end of the new viaduct into the tunnel?—l am, etc., STRAP-HANGER.
