OBITUARY

Mr. Thomas Taylor The death occurred on Sunday night of Mr. Thomas Taylor, of “Beaumaris,” East Coast, an old settler of the Wairarapa, states a “Dominion” Special Service message from Masterton. The late Mr. Taylor, who was 86 years of age, came to New Zealand with his parents in the ship Avon in 1859. Landing at Nelson, the family first settled at Blenheim, and spent many years there. Mr. Taylor came to the Wairarapa 37 years ago, and settled at “Beaumaris.” He continued to work the property until he retired about ten years ago, after which it was carried on by three of his sons. Deceased was one of the oldest Freemasons and Oddfellows in the Dominion, having joined the two fraternities in Marlborough 68 years ago. He was married in Blenheim to Miss Thomas, a menlber of a farming family at Grovetown, in Marlborough. His wife predeceased him in 1920. He is survived by a family of three daughters, Mesdames J. A. Toogood (“Ngalrana,” East Coast), A. Laing (Seatoun, Wellington), and E. Fowler (Upper Plain, Masterton), and five sons, Messrs. J. (Tuhlrangi, Masterton), T. (Beaumaris, Masterton), G. (“Craigie Lea,” Te Wharau), W. (“Makanui,!’ Masterton), and C. Taylor (“Waireka,” Masterton). Mr. Taylor also leaves nineteen grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren. Mrs. Inia Te Rang! The death occurred at Parewanui (Rangitikei) of a member of the ancient Tane-Nui-a-Rangi tribe —Mrs. Inia te Rang! (Te Morehu), states a “Dominion” Special Service message from Wanganui. ■ The late Mrs. Inia Te Rang! was also a member of the sub-tribes, Ngatl Mairehau and Ngati Te Rangl Te Paia. Her ancestors claim to have come out on the two historical canoes, Talnui and Kurahaupo, from Hawaiki. Mrs. Inia was born at Tiakitahuna (“the landing beach”), near the mouth of the Manawatu River, about 78 years ago, and 53 years ago she married Te Rangi, who survives her, as does also one son, Mr. Akuhata, of Rangiotu, and a daughter, Mrs. Paanga Kawaria, better known in Wanganui and in the Bulls district as Mrs. “Jimmy” Governor. There are also fourteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. The well-known Palmerston North Rugby player, Rangi Akuira, is a grandson. Mr. E. J. Xllen ' The death occurred at Nelson on Sunday, says a Press Association mes-1 sage, of Mr. E. J. Allen, retired bank manager, at the age of 80. As manager of the local branch of the Bank of New Zealand the late Mr. Allen was closely associated with the business development of Nelson city. Joining the bank at Westport, Mr. Allen, who was a son of Mr. G. Allen, one of Wellington’s early settlers, was stationed successively at Greymouth, Hokitika. Knmara, Ross, Reefton, Masterton, Wellington, Opunake, Feilding, and New Plymouth. He came to Nelson in 1901. Deceased was universally respected. He is survived by his wifq nnd one son. Mr. K. Allen, of the Bank of New Zealand at Featherston. Miss F. E. Rose Miss Florence Ernestine Rose, daughter of the late Mr. John Rose, who was a resident of Kilbirnie, died at Masterton on Saturday. The late Miss Rose was a sister of Mr. Henry Rose, secretary of the Government. Life Insurance, and an aunt of R. A. Rose, the wellknown athlete.
