About People and Events « TRAMWAY FARES The Wellington Tramways Union considers that If the only alternative to increased tramway fares ir etrenchment, a trial should be given of the proposal to increase the price of the three-shilUng card by sixpence. The 'suggested increase is 16 2-3 per cent, on the current price of the card, and the Tramways Union considers that this is preferable to adding another 40 men to the unemployed ranks by dismissals. A union official stated on Saturday that tram conductors earned £4/16/- a week at the most. He remarked that people who advocated efficiency in municipal services perversely approved of transport at an uneconomical fare. j Alleged ForgeryEdward Helinsley Dawson was charged in the Petone Police Court before Messrs. Charged with the theft of a garden hose from a shed in Ngahauranga, George Hill and William Janies Fox were sentenced to three months’ imprisonment by Messrs. Potts and A. Anderson, J.P.’s, in the Petone Police Court last week. The police are anxious for information as to the owner of the hose.

Injury to Hand. J. MeWhitier, tailor’s cutter, of 108 Britomart Street, Berhampore, received a lacerated wound to his left hand last evening when a piece of iron bar fell on it when he was working in a boatshed at Evans Bay. He was taken to the hospital by the Free Ambulance.

Body Found in Harbour. Found floating face downward, the body of Fred Plumridge, aged about 60, was recovered fjom the harbour by Mr. T. Tate a short distance out from the Clyde Quay Wharf at 5 a m. on Saturday. Deceased, who resided for the past two years at 11 Jessie Street, was a baker by occupation, but was unemployed. He was last seen alive on Friday evening. It is believed that there are relatives at Christchurch.

Fire nt Brooklyn. A fire nt Brooklyn, which was seen just as "The D minion” was going to press on Saturday morning, took place in an unoccupied house of five rooms in Kareap Street. The house was owned by Mrs. Annie M. Wellwood. Orangi-Kiiupapa Road. Northland The outbreak was quickly suppressed b.v the brigade, after the building and furniture were somewhat damaged by flames and water. The house next door, owned and occupied by Mr. A. Duckworth, was scorched by the flames.
