HOTT IN THE LEAD

Senior Cricket Matches KILBIRNIE BEATEN BY 73 * Varsity Runs Petone Close OLD BOYS & INSTITUTE WIN By defeating Kilbirnie by 73 runs , on the first innings on Saturday, Hutt attained the honour of being tne only unbeaten team in the senior cricket championship competition. Good bowling .by McGirr and Judd gave Hutt the victory, though Hepbum and Christophersen made a valiant effort to save the day for Kilbirnie. Though the weather was perfect and conditions ideal, for run-getting, the batting throughout the afternoon was not inspiring, and in not one case did a team succeed in reaching the totals which had been run up by opponents on' the opening day. Old Boys defeated Wellington by 33 runs on the first Innings, and Institute outplayed Midland by 110 on the first innings. Midland did well to run up 285 for the loss of six wickets in the second innings, W. Dustin having bad luck to fail to reach the century by four runs Doneghue also played a bright innings for 64 The most exciting game of the afternoon was that between Petone and University on the Hutt Recreation Ground, which saw the students just fail;to reach Petone’s total of 2i6 by four-runs. ■ RESULTS AT A GLANCE Hutt, 253 and 6—loo, beat KilbirBoys, 260 and 5—173, beat Wellington, 227. • FIGHTING FINISH Petone Beats Varsity by 4 Runs Beginning th& day with 63 runs-.on for no wickets, University made a valiant effort to reach the 276 set it by Petone on the Hutt Recreation .Ground, and only failed bv four runs to reach this objective. University lost its first wicket soon after the resumption of play, when Arndt was given out leg-before-wicket, after having scored 25. Pacey, who was 43, was dismissed similarly, when tne total was 79. and when Caldwell was run out. three wickets were down for Jo. 6 Cramond and Bailey stopped the rot; . the former playing good cricket,’.until, he was caught by H. E. Nicholls off Rotherham, at 44. The partnership had put on 69 runs. Bailey was bowled after scor- , ing 38. and Stevens made 21. Seven wickets were down for 216. ana, with three wickets in. hand. University wanted 67 runs to win. The. eighth wicket went for 232. And University needed every run it could get.. Blandford and Harrison • were at the wickets, batting steadily. Harrison, who made 24, was caught off Hope, and 259 went up on the board.- Blandford and Bagge conducted the last partnership, and carried the score along well; 260, 265. and 270 appeared, and it seemed that University would be successful. The run-getting continued, 271, 272, and then Hope accepted a catch off Rotherham, dismissing Blandford, and Petone won by a margin of four runs. Rotherham, who took four wickets for 71 runs, and Hope, who captured three for 73, were the best of the Petone bowlers. Detailed scores are:— PETONE. First innings 2,0 UNIVERSITY—First. Innings. If. ' FIRST INNINGS WIN Old Boys Beat Wellington By a margin of 33 runs on the first innings, Old Boys defeated Wellington at the Basin Reserve, thus securing a 5point win.. Canditions were all in favour of the batsmen, but although four scores of over the half-century were made, fortunes generally went the bowlers’ way. Whyte and Hamilton, the not out men from the previous Saturday, resumed the innings for Wellington, but Hamilton was soon dismissed off Duncan’s bowling.* Hollings, the next man in, assisted Whyte in raising the score considerably, but the only other batsman to master the bowling and hit up a creditable score was Morgan, who was dismissed by Dempster -when he had scored 77. Dempster, who did not play the previous Saturday, proved to be Old Boys’ most successful bowler, and finished the day with an average of four for 36. „ , The feature of Old Boys second innings was Dempster’s performance in hitting up 77 runs in quick time. He was rather ■ lucky—three chances were not accepted by the Wellington fieldsmen —but runs came from Ju’s bat in great style, his score including 13 fours and two sixes. He was caught in the outfield from an attempted big hit. When stumps were drawn. Old Boys had put on 173 for the loss of five wickets. Details are as follow: — WELLINGTON.—First Innings. INSTITUTE’S 5-POINT WIN Midland Makes Run Too Late If Institute hoped to gain a sevenpoint win by sending Midland inf or a follow-on, in the match which was con tinned at the Kilbirnie Reserve, it must have been disappointed, for so.well did the Midland batsmen perform, that with seven wickets down, they exceeded Institute’s score of 238. made the previous Saturday, by 47 runs. * • » *. Resuming the match with three wickets down for 58 runs. Midland could do nothing with the bowling, on a hard and bumping wicket. No better luck attended the side at first in the follow-on. The bumping pitch put Clark out of action; and Baker again went cheaply The partnership, of Dustin and Doneghue, however, brightened prospects considerably, 160 being real-E-Jli Dustin hit all round the wicket for a confident 96 Hutchings scoring even faster for 64. which included deven 4’s and one 6. HUTT’S UNBEATEN RECORD

Kilbirnie 73 Runs Behind

With two wickets down for 12 runs, Kilbirnie’ had a stiff task in front of it when it set out at the Basin Reserve to head Hutt’s total of 253. Matters were not improved when Uoltman, with one run added, touched a fast rising delivery by McGirr, and was snapped up by Biggar behind the wickets. Christopherson, the. Kilbirnie captain, joined Hepburn, and the pair made a valiant effort to restore the desperate position.- Batting very soundly, they carried the score from 13 .to 119 by good cricket. Hepburn was particularly severe on Judd, whom he kept getting away on the on side, his score including a lusty smite for six over the square-leg boundary. Christopherson pjayed a captain’s part, and was out to pick up everything offering. He also made’ some neat leg glides off Judd, and punched the slow bowlers hard. After the partnership had lasted seventy-two minutes, Christopherson. who had reached 47, popped one from Judd into Aim’s hands at second slip. The Kilbirnie captain had played well his part, as he assisted Hepburn to put on 106 for the fourth wicket. He hit eight fours. This spirited fighting spirit was not maintained, as Judd and McGirr, both of whom were bowling well, then got the ascendancy, and quickly' polished off the remainder of the side for the indifferent total of 180, the smallest score Kilbirnie has made this season. Hepburn was the only batsman who rose to the occasion, and he showed his team mates that runs could be. got. His 63 was the effort of a batsman, a six and eight fours figuring on his score. >' . ’ " McGirr bowled particularly well for Hutt, in capturing five wickets . for 44 runs off 167 deliveries,-and he was well supported by Judd, who secured five for 85 off ISO balls. The Hutt fielding was clean and smart, if a catch or two went begging, and Biggar did outstanding work with the gloves, catching two and stumping one. . . Hutt commenced its second innings at 5 o’clock, but fared badly against good bowling by Crook. When stumps were drawn at 6.20, six wickets were down for 100. Biggar and Ross put on 44 for the first wicket, but when 25 the former was bowled by a leg-break from Morris. Gwilliam helped Ross to put on 28 for the second wicket. Crook made a bowling spurt, and had all the batsmen in trouble. After reaching 19, Ross was taken by Coltman behind the wickets off Crook, and Gwilliam was beautifully caught at first slip by Ward off the fast bowler, who also disposed of W’arnes and Lees, capturing four wickets for 31 runs. The Kilbirnie fielding was particularly clean and smart in this innings. Hutt thus won on the first innings by 73 runs, and has the honour of now being the only unbeaten team in the senior championship competition this season. The following are the scores: — HUTT.
