NO BELLS THIS YEAR

Delays With Carillon ANZAC DAY CEREMONY It is now evident to those closely concerned that there is no prospect of the Wellington'carillon “softening the evening with its mellow sweetness" this year. Though steady progress is being made wibh the construction of .the louvred tower at Mount Cook, the contractors do not anticipate being through .with’their work until December. AL ■The bell-hangers, who are coming out from England to suspend the 49 bells in the tower, will not begin their work until the tower contractors are away from the job, which means that nothing much in the way of bell-hanging will be done until the New Year. As the job of permanently hanging the bells Is likely to extend over three months, there is a probability that Anzac Day, April 25. 1932, may be considered the most fitting day on which to consecrate the carillon. The carillon structure has now. reached a height on a level with the roof of the Wellington Technical College,- which forms its background, and from some .points of view the tower is boldly sil'houetted against the southern sky.
