The 1931 Elections
Sir, —reading the political columns of your paper this morning I see that theie is a possibility of this year’s election being postponed. Now, Sir, do you not think that in fairness to the electors, who are the chopping-block for such actions as the 10 per cent, cut, increased unemployment tax, and the increased, not decreased, cost of living by the Government’s increased duty on workers’ necessities such as sugar and tea and other household commodities, that the self-same electors should have the right to express their approval or disapproval of such actions i «A« for the present Government, they have no mandate for the above-mentioned actions from the people of this country. The only mandate they have from the electors is the piece of bluff which was worked on the electors last election, namely, the £70,000,000 loan and the increased prosperity. .... L . Knowing this has failed they should do the right thing and not fleece the public in other directions. They have shown their courage when they decline to impose an embargo on the Matson Shipping Company, which is controlled by a nation which we have the most adverse trade balance of any country we trade with. The outcome of this will be another tax to cope with the unemployed maritime men affected by this concern’s operations. In conclusion, may I hope that if the members of Parliament have not the courage to explain their political doings to their constituents the people will have the chance to exercise their most treasured and precious right, i.e., that of franchise. —I am, etc “ CHARLBS a.
