Vice-Regal. Her Excellency, Lady Bledisloe, opened the annual bazaar of St. Thomas’s Church, Wellington South, yesterday afternoon. This afternoon she will perform a similar ceremony at St. Mark’s Church. An investiture and reception will be held at Government House this evening. Temple White, who has been adjudicating at the Dunedin Competitions, returned to Wellington yesterday morning. Professor J. Shelley, of Canterbury College, has been granted leave of absencs to undertake a lecturing tour of the United States. Mr. H. R. Thomas, managing director of the Fur Trading Company of New Zealand and Brodrick and Co.. Ltd., is visiting Australia. Dr. J. Hight, rector of Canterbury College, who has been attending the Universities’ Congress at Edinburgh, will return to Christchurch on September 21. Mr. W. J. Martin, Nelson; Mr. 11. R. Grundy, Havelock North; Mr. W. V. Patterson. Hawera; Mr. E. J. Iles, Cromwell ; and Mr. 11. J. Martin. Palmerston North, are at the Grand Hotel. The Rev. F. H. Ross, pastor of the First Methodist Episconal Church, San Pedro. California, has arrived in Auckland, and after a fortnight’s evangelistic mission there, will pay brief visits to othejr centres in the North Island. Mr. Paul Cullen, for a long time associated with the De Luxe Theatre as organist and vocal soloist, has accepted an engagement from the Williamson Films (N.Z.), and will take up his duties at the Regent Theatre, Auckland, this month.

Mr. Harry Guthrie, governor of Rotary in New Zealand, will arrive from Vancouver next week after attending a conference with Rotary International officers in Chicago. His messages and impressions will be placed before a meeting of presidents and secretaries of New Zealand Rotary clubs to be held in Wellington next Wednesday and Thursday. Mr. A. Falconer and Mr. J. A. Haggitt, Dunedin; Mr. 11. M. Aitken. Invercargill; Mr. G. H. Congreve. Mr. A. J. G. Aldridge, and Mr. T. W. Robinson, Christchurch; Mr. 11. N. Hilliard, Mr. A. G. Graham. Mr. D. A. Neal, and Mr. F. Firth. Auckland: and the Rev. C. F. Pierce, Wanganui, are at the Hotel St. George. Mr. John W. Hicks, jun., managing director of Paramount Film Service in Australia, New Zealand, and the Far East, travelled to Auckland on the Ventura. Accompanied by Mrs. Hicks, he will spend a few weeks hern on a combined business and pleasure tour. Mr. S. 11. Craig, general manager for New Zealand, was a passenger on the same ship.

Mr. J. J. Goldsmith, at the meeting of the Genetai Citizens’ Unemployment Committee on Tuesday evening, was congratulated on the manner in which he filled the office of chairman of the executive. In moving a motion of thanks to Mr. Goldsmith for presiding, Mr. G. Mitchell said that he was certainly the right man in the right place. Mr. F. W. Cone, of Canterbury, who is retiring from tho directorate of the New Zealand Fruitgrowers’ Federation, was tbe subject of eulogistic remarks by the president, Mr. T. C. Brash, at the conference yesterday. Mr. Cone, said Mr. Brash, had been a director for ten years, and had rendered great service to the fruitgrowing industry, and the federation regretted losing him from the board. At tho same time, Mr. Brash extended a hearty welcome to the new director. Mr. W. Sissons, of Hawke’s Bay. Mr. Cone, in acknowledging the president’s remarks, referred to the growth of the federation in th* period h» had been on tho board.
