CHILDREN’S CONCERT

Success at Waiwetu

Ono of the best children's concerts for a long time past was given in the Anglican Church Hall at Waiwetu on Saturday. Every available seat in the hall was occupied. The children taking part were aged from four years upward. Hard work and wonderful patience were exercised to bring the items to the perfection which they attained. On all sides one heard comments on the surprising excellence of the concert. It is difficult to single out Individual children for praise, as the items were so varied, but the playlets, and concerted singing, showed talent and work on the part of the children as well as those responsible for their training. As soloists, the tiny kindergarten tots were delightful in an action song. Billy Goodfellow, aged seven years, showed himself a real character actor. The Misses Knight, I’a-uline and Rankin, danced, and secured much applause. Every item was encored, but on account of the youth of the little actors, encores could not be given in every case. Mr. Collins, superintendent of, the Sunday school, announced that the concert would bo repeated In about a month’s time at St. Janies Hall, Woburn Road. The idea is to raise funds for building extensions, furnishing the kindergarten, and general purposes, as the growth of the Sunday school has passed •. all expeeta-' tions. It was commenced in January, 1027, in the small front room of a private house, with seven ■ scholars, and a year later, at the opening of the church room that class had grown to twenty-seven, which, with older scholars, formed the nucleus of the present Sunday school, which now numbers 130. In addition to songs, recitations, and playlettos, there were two well-rendered pianoforte items and a mandoline solo. Christopher Robin saying liis prayers was delightfully realistic, and the evening concluded with an item by the men. teachers being well applauded.
