Miramar Club’s Tourney HIGH STANDARD SHOWN The Capitol Theatre was well filled last evening on the occasion of the Miramar Boxing Club’s annual tournament. The standard of boxing throughout the evening was good, and interest was heightened by the appearance of Ted Morgan. profesison'al; welterweight champion of New Zealand, who boxed two exhibition rounds in succession with T. Arbuthnot and W. Wither. Jack Donoghue and Jack Crowley also staged a bright exhibition spar. The following are the results: — Midgets.—G. McNamara beat B. Symons in a midget contest. Both scaled 4st. 91b.. and McNamara owed his victory to a right swing, which had weight behind it. Symons showed clever footPaperweight.—Les Broomfield beat S. Troy. Both weighed <st. 71b. Though giving away the advan 1 -e of. height cm reach. Broomfield plied a straight left to the face, which had his opponent s nose bleeding copiously throughout the second and third rounds. ~ . . . . ~ Flyweight: D. Loveridge (Bs-t.) beat H. Allott (7»t. 101 b.). There was. plenty of action both ■ lads mixing It freely, and there was not a dull moment. The disagreed, and the referee s verdict went Bantamweight: J. Scott (Bst. 31b.) beat D. Sendall (Bst. 21b.). There was 'Plenty of hard hitting, Scott .betog'the straighter hitter of Hie pair, and had Sendall in distress througout the last two rounds. Ron. Wood Bst. 21b.) proved too rugged for Stan Donoghue (Bst.). The New Zealand flyweight champion showed some pretty boxing, but Wood kept boring In with both hands, and won a clear-cut victory.

Featherweight: G. Marshall (Ost.) knew too much for B. McKay (Oet). The winner did all the leading, and beat his man to the punch In every exchange. F Henderson (Set 01b) beat M. Vlollch (Bst 111 b). This was a battle between the left and the right, and the left brought victory to Henderson, who was faster on his feetr and often caused his opponent’s Tight swings J. Meaclem (Ost 31b) beat J. Aicheson (Ost 81b) by reason of more dogged fighting spirit. ,The lads did not do each other much harm, and probably the man 1 who worked hardest during the bout was Meaclem’s second, who did some great shadow sparring outside the ropes. K. Stephens (Ost 41b) was , too gttod for Blackwell (Ost). A solid right to the side of tha head pnt Blackwell down for six In the flrst.round, and a left hook bo rocked him in the second round that the referee stopped the Contest,-.and; awarded ' the: bout to Stephens. Ted Adams (Ost lib) gave B. Trillo (Ost) a boxing lesson. The winner chivalrously refrained from unduly punishing his opponent, but even then the referee had to call a halt in the third round.'- - -'-A., . Welterweight: J. Cannls (lOst 71b) beat J. Scott' GOst 71b) in the most colourful bout of the evening. Scott had tho better of /the opening round, but Cannls came to : llght, and, taking all that was coming to him, took the verdict by boring in with both hands in the last round. Middleweight: F. De Silva (lost. 121 b) beat A. Hawker (list.) in the best bout of the evening. There was little between the pair, but De Silva earned his victory bv a spirited burst in the last round. ’special 'bout: T. Troy (Bst. 4lb) and B. Wilson (7st. 61b) appeared in a special bout, the decision going to Troy. . !. Allocation of Trophies. At the close of the programme, the trophies were presented by Mr. G. P. Aldridge, secretary of the Now Zealand Boxing-Association ,as follow: — London Cup, for. most scientific and aggressive boxer: H. Allott. » . «. .Lou Smith Cup, for beat boxer in the lightweight and flyweight divisions: T. James Cup for most scientific boxer: D. Loveridge. This boxer also took the Williams’ medal for winning tho flyweight C °Mayer and Kean's medal for best boxer In the bantam class: R. 'Vfood. Scott Cashman Medal, for best boxer in featherweight division rF. Murphy and Stewart Cup, for best boxer In the welter and middla-classes: F. de Si L. a trophy, for best boxer in welter division:,. J. Cannls. _ „ j, _ Messrs, E. Perry-and B. J. Guise were referees, while, the Judges Messrs.' A. Curtayne, B? J.- Guise, G. P. Aldridge, and E. Perry. Club Congratulated. Mr. Aldridge congratulated the Miramar club upon the manner in which it was keeping the sport going in the district, and said’ that the tournaments staged by the . club were worthy of better support.
