CANNING STATUE IN ATHENS. A statue of George Canning, the distinguished British statesman, who died in 1827, was unveiled at Athens by Eleutherios Veuizelos, Prime Minister, on April 6, at a ceremony attended by Alex. Zaimis, the President of the Republic; Patrick Ramsay, the British Minister; and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Boot who had given the statue to the Greek nation as a fitting memorial of Canning’s activity in the union of England, France and Russia iu the cause of Greece. The statue, carved from .white Carrara marble, is the work of Sir Francis Legal t Chantrv, who made it to the order of the Duke of Sutherland. A replica of it made bv the” same sculptor is in an aisle of Westminster Abbey. The original statue remained long in Trentham Hall, and was then transferred to Mr. Boot’s residence.
