Licensing Referendum
Sir, —To put forward the present state of depression and unemployment as an argument in favour of the postponement of the referendum or curtailment of the election is surely not reasonable. The taking of the referendum wbuld release a large sum of money, which would be used for creating employment. If in the work the policy of using the unemployed, wherever possible, were adopted, the referendum would be very beneficial just now. As regards the election, its effect would be beneficial in several ways. Monotony is one of the greatest causes of depression. A fresh start would mean a new impetus. The position is serious enough to justify our placing the best available business minds in control of the affairs of the country. It is just possible that the present Government does not entirely express that.—l am, etc., CONTRA. Wellington, August 22.
