Disturbances followed Mr. Gandhi’s arrival at Bombay from Simla, en route to England. A crowd of hostile Communists carried banners Inscribed; "Gandhi goes to London on bended knees.” The Communists held a demonstration on Ballard Pier, protesting against the Congress “surrender” to the Government They were set upon by Gandhi supporters, who burned their flags and beat the demonstrators with poles. Many were injured. Mr. Gandhi addressed a crowd of many thousands in pouring rain before the liner Rajputana sailed. SENTENCE ON REBELS Eleven Condemned to Die LED REVOLTS IN BURMA (Rec. August 89, 5.5 p.m.) Calcutta, August 29., Eleven Burmese rebels, including Saya San, leader of revolts in the Shan States and in Tharrawaddy, have been sentenced to death, and eighteen others to life transportation. According to ' a communique and correspondence issued by the Governmentof India to-day in connection with the decision of Mr. Gandhi to attend the Round Table Conference in London as representative of the Congress, the settlement between Lord Irwin and Mr. Gandhi, published on March 5, remains 'operative. * The Government will continue to observe the settlement and will carefully consider representations in respect of it and Congress undertakes once again to fulfil its obligations under the settlement. ' The communique and correspondence show that Congress has acquiesced in the refusal of all its demands other than that for an inquiry into the alteration in respect of the revenue collection in the Surat district.
