YOUNG BOXERS

Rongotai College Tourney The annual boxing tournament of Rongotat College;, was held at.tlie college -on .Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday of last week. 'About -90 boys took part, and enthusiasm throughout was very keen. ■ ■ -• "> <■ . ... . A handsome silver shield, the cost, of which was contributed to by the school, ladies’ auxiliary, Boxing Association, and Mr. Cocks, was offered,for. competition as a teams trophy, ■ The contestants were divided into five teams, there being in each team boys of weights ranging from 1601 b. to 601 b. Shield points were awarded as follow: 1 point for taking part in the tournament. 1 point for winning a bout, and 2 points for winning a final. The issue was iu doubt until the last bout. The Greeks, under Guthrie, were winners with 39 points; the Romans,,under Leeks, were second with 38 points; nnd the Trojans, under Kear I, third with 37 points.

Of the 70 boots fought, Mr. F. MartynRenner decided the preliminaries and semifinals, and Mr. Hull, of the Wellington Boxing Association, judged the finals. Broomfield was adjudged the best boxer, but Coveney, the most promising of the youngsters,; was awarded the. Boxing Association’s medal. ■ Following are the results:— , . 1001 b.. SOlb., A class: Coveney beat Wallace 111. 601 b.: Sefton bent Roberts 11. Heavyweight: Guthrie I beat Wilson IL Many of the boys showed distinct promise. particularly Coveney. Wallace 111., Oldfield. Watson. Broomfield. Parfitt. NortonTaylor. and Coleman 11. At the conclusion, Mr. Renner returned thanks to the Boxing Association for Its many kindnesses, and to all those who had assisted in making the tournament a success.
