THE RACING WORLD

WINNAGAN SCORES Victory in Hunt Cup GOLD DAWN’S SPRINT Racing at New Plymouth Dominion Special Service. New Plymouth, August 29. There was fairly wide interest in the race meeting which was conducted nt New Plymouth to-day by the Taranaki Hunt Club. The gathering was well jiatronised and the general result appeared to be satisfactory. The totalisator turnover was £0716. Last year £10,494 was put through the machine. Moerangi’s Easy Win. Lack of condition brought about the defeat of Callapat iu the Hack and Hunters’ Hurdles, for which he was solidly backed. Moerangi and Callapat were in front practically all the way. Moerangi led by a couple of lengths with a round to go, but Callapat drew level along the back, and the pair entered the straight together. Moerangi came away in the last furlong and won easily by eight lengths from Garrick, who beat the nonstaying Callapat by four lengths for second place. Eveniug Hero was fourth. ■ . . . - / 'X' ■ • ■ ■ ■ . Gibraltar At Good Price. Gibraltar hopped out of the barrier well in the Opunake Scurry and gradually worked to the front, leading into the straight from Forceful and Psychologist, with Cornerman and Tavora in the middle of the field. Gibraltar ran on nicely to win well by a length and a half from Forceful, with Cornerman finishing well half a length away, and Psychologist, Tavora and Goldzone next. The winner paid a good price. Favourite Beaten. Easter Time was made a warm favourite for the Members’ Handicap, but he could not run the distance out. With the race half over he was taken to the front, but Richfield headed him before the straight was reached. Richfield won without effort by half a length from Seatown, who beat Balloon a neck, with Little Doubt and Easter Time next. Seatown ran on very nicely nt the right end and is fairly forward. Balloon,

too, was travelling well at the finish. Easter Time was disappointing, and nothing had a chance with Richfield. Hunt Cup. There was a fair range of wagering in the Taranaki Hunt Cup, which was easily won by Winnagan. Nimblefoot made the early running, but passing the stands the last time Winnagan was in front from Michael Shimose, Nimblefoot and Royal Reign. Winnagan went away in the last round, and eventually scored very easily by a dozen lengths from Royal Reign, who beat Michael Shimose nicely by a length for second place. Nimblefoot did best of the others. The winner, now trained by L. Knapp, of Awapuni, for Mr. K. McK. Duncan, is an improved gelding. Day Lass fell a mile from home, when going wpll. Gueress fell fairly early in the race. Won as She Liked. Royal Finance, backed to odds- on, won the Waihi Hack Handicap in good style .from a poor lot. Kissless was soon in ifront from a bunched field, but Royal Finance ran to the front-entering the straight, and won as she liked by a length and a half from Singer, with Kissless a length away third, and Tentcall fourth. Singer finished well. Gold Dawn Too Good. There was a lot of interest in the meeting of Lady Quex and Orapai in the Stratford Handicap, for which the former was a good favourite. Gold Dawn went to the front at the start frbm Lady Quex, but Orapai soon ran into second position. However, Orapai could never get to Gold Dawn, who won by a good length, with Lady Quex four lengths back third. Kawhakiua was the only other starter. The winner was more forward than either Lady Quex or Orapai, and that contributed to her victory. ■ Moerangi. Again. The Author made the early running in the Hunters’ Flat Race, but Day Lass had his measure half a mile from home, where Moerangi was sitting in behind the pair, going easily. Moerangi hit the front two furlongs from home, and stuck on to win by three lengths from Day Lass. Spanish Prince was four lengths away third, and Puawhato fourth, then The Author and Gasform. Final Event. Singer finished up favourite for the Urenui Hack Handicap, and after a good contest won by half a length from Kissless, who was unlucky, as she had to come from a long way back. Kissless finished well to beat Goldzone by a head for second place. Moatoa, who was well backed, was fourth. The topweight, Peter Jackson, w’as never dangerous. ■ \ Detailed Results HACK AND HUNTERS’ HURDLES, of 60 sovs.; second 10 sovs., third 0 sovs. About one mile and a half. 3 B. C. La Pouple’s b. g. V.eilmond in the Warwick Stakes ran disappointingly, though he finished fourth. Autopay and Gesture were unplaced in the Campbelltown Handicap. [Ammon Ra is disclosing himself as the leading three-year-old in Sydney, and his already short price for the A.J.C. Derby is likely to firm further as the result of Saturday’s success. The fact that he led all the way shows that he was too good for the opposition. The reference to Segovia is obscure. Apparently it is an indication that Ammon Ra showed unexpected brilliance in the early stages of- the race. The time cabled for the Warwick Stakes is incorrect. The winner, Johnnie Jason, is a brown gelding by Treclare, who sired the last- A'J.C. Derby winner Tregilla. Johnnie Jason’s form will make him enter into Derby calculations.. Cypress appears to have run a good race, but he has now been defeated twice in succession, and he will probably recede soillewhat in favour for the three-year-old classic. Autopay and Gesture arc among the prominently discussed Epsom candidates, Gesture, in fact, having received strong support. Saturday was their first appearance, so too much importance need not be attached to their failure. No indication is given as to whether they ran well or badly. The distance of their race was six furlongs.—“ The Watcher.”] LEG TROUBLE DEVELOPS Anxiety About Balloon King Sydney, August 29. The prominent spring candidate Balloon King has developed leg trouble and is giving his trainer anxiety. WANGANUI MEETING Nominations for Spring Fixture The drastic r cut in stake money found necessary by the Wanganui Jockey Club makes it interesting to note the response of owners to the spring programme, entries for which closed on Friday night. With the exception of the Maraugal Handicap, the principal event the first day. they must be considered .very satisfactory. It is hard to understand how only five were considered worthy of entry in the main race. A couple of dozen two-year-olds figure in the Debutante Stakes, the opening juvenile event of the season, so that It will, as usual, provide au interesting contest. The races w'lll be held on Thursday and Saturday, September 17 and 19. and the handicaps are due on Friday. Three foals have already made their appearance at Mr. John Donald’s Westmere Stud. The imported mare Violet II has a colt by Chief Ruler. Captain Bunsby has two representatives in a filly from jenolan and a filly from Tinkler. N.Z. Cup Entries. The New Zealand Cup has attracted forty-nine nominations, an increase of two compared with last year. There are some notable absentees from the horses who 'showed good staying form last season. Nightmarch, winner of the cup last year, has been retired to thq stud, while Star Stranger, a proved stayer, is another not in training. Motere. (Auckland Cup) and Stanchion (Wellington Cup) are missing, likewise Karapoti and Cylinder, the best three-year-olds of last season. But the list is a good one. It includes the usual percentage of horses who seem to be flattered by their appearance in such company, but when they drop out there will be plenty of the right sort left, even if there are no outstanding performers. The cup candidates will provide special interest in the racing at most of the meetings scheduled for the interval bettween now and November. Of the horses whp the field for the New Zealan'd Cup last year, Nightmarch (first) and In the Shade (third) are missing from this year’s list, as are Star Stranger, Prodice, Desert Glow, Merry Damon, Count Palatine, and Courageous, who were unplaced. Concentrate (second), Gay Crest, My OwnBlack Mint, and Duellona ar6 the horses last year's field eligible to run again. A Useful Team. Charmeuse was given a short rest after the Grand National meeting, but she is again in regular work. She will be raced at the early spring meetings in the south, where she should do well, and by November she may be equal to running out a good mile and a quarter. H. Nurse will have a strong team this season. Ringing Cheer, Metal Bird, Palace, Knocklong Giggleswick and Huntley being others in his stable who will be available for early meetings, with Lancer in reserve for the Riccarton carnival in November. Compris and Melbourne Cup. Mr. P. F. Campbell still has a trip to Australia in contemplation for Compris, with the Melbourne Cup as his chief objective. The arrangements have not been completed, however, and as a precaution the Kilbroney gelding has been accorded a nomination in the New Zealand Cup.
