GRAIN AND PRODUCE Canterbury Markets Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, August 29. Market conditions since the mid-week show no change. The revival recorded early in the week .In the potato market was of a transient nature, and values have slipped back to the rate ruling last week: 35/-, f.0.b., 5.1., and 17/6 on trucks. The temporary firming was due to the demand that set in for the Wingatul’s shipment. The Waimarlno left for the north on Friday night, and the Walpahl is due to sail next Wednesday. The following are quotations for produce to be paid to farmers, on trucks, free of commission, sacks extra, except where otherwise stated:— Wheat—Tuscan, 5/5 on trucks: Hunters, 5/6 to 5/7, Fowl wheat, 5/2 to 5/2J prompt, f.0.b., s.e. Oats—Algerians, 2/3; A Gartons, 2/6; B’s, 2/4. Barley—Cape, 2/9 to 3/-; malting 4/-. Potatoes—To 20/- a ton. Chaff—£2/15/-. Partridge Peas—4/3. ' Red Clover—6d to G[d. White Clover—Bd.to 9d. Italian Ryegrass—2/-. Perennial Ryegrass—Canterbury, 3/- to 3/3. Cocksfoot —Akaroa, 3d to 3}<l; Plains to 3d. Bran—Local, £5 a ton, f.0.b.; shipping, £4 a ton. f.0.b.: 10/- extra for smaller packings. Pollard—Local, £6 a ton, f.0.b.; shipping. 24/10/- a ton, f.0.b.; 10/- extra for smaller packings. Flour—Wholesale price, £l6/12/6 a ton for 2001 b sacks, with the usual increments for smaller packings. Duty on Australian Onions Representations by the Canterbury Onion Growers' Association to have the duty on Australian onions increased from £l/5/to £3/15/- a ton while the price of Onions in New Zealand remains at £8 a ton, a sliding scale of duty to be adopted with any rise in price over £B, are to be supported by the Franklin Produce Growers’ Association. It was explained at a meeting of produce growers at Pukekohe Hill last week, convened by the Franklin Association, that Imports of onions from Australia amounted in 1929 to 185 tons, value £1704; in 1930, to 1617 tons, value £9655; and in 1931. to 2197 tons, value £12,214. Good quality onions were stated to be still available at Pukekohe from last season, but could not be eold at a payable price owing to importations. Regarding the proposal made last year that arrangements should be made for cool storage of locally-grown onions at one of the Auckland freezing works so that local growers could supply requirements all the year, the secretary, Mr. G. T. Parvin, mentioned that it was found on investigation the growers would have to find some £3OOO . to make the proposal practicable.
