DAIRY PRODUCE SHIPMENTS

Magnitude of the Work Interest!*? references to its shipping activities are made in the annual report of the Dairy Board. There are 10 grading p.orts in New Zealand where dairy produce Is loaded direct, and from Patea, which is also a grading port, and from which nearly 25 per cent, of the Dominion’s output of cheese is shipped the produce has to be brought in small coastal vessels to connect with the ocean steamer In Wellington. There are nearly 200,000 tons of dairy produce to be shipped, and almost 500 factories making shipments. Some of these factories ship both cheese and creamery. butter, and nearly all cheese factories ship whey butter. The practice of dividing outputs among several firms is growing, and where f.o.b. sales are made there is an in-, creasing tendency to make them for short periods. For every shipment from each factory there have to be bills lading specifications, grade notes, and insurance particulars, with separate documents for cheese, creamery butter and whey butter, and these are quadrupled it the shipment of a factory is divided among four merchants. Every year the work is growing in magnitude, and Instead of becoming "routine” it is becoming ever more difficult. In last year's annual report it was stated that approximately 18,000 sets of bills/lading had been prepared. For the season just closed the figure has grown almost to 25,000 sets, giving some Indication of the increase in the amount of work. The quantities of dairy produce shipped to ports to which the board'dl shipping contract Is applicable were:— Butter Cheesa Boxes. Crates. 1030-31 .... 3,625.000 1,201,000 1929-30 .... 3,447,228 1,198,151 1928-29 .... 2,874,'686 1,151,961 The figures for 1930-31 record an increase of approximately 178.000 boxes of butter and 3000 crates of. cheese. - The swing-over by cheese factories to the manufacture of butter in the autumn was to some extent responsible for the increase. There were 104 final' sailings during 1930-31, compared with 100 for 1929-30 and 95 for 1928-2 J. The total number ot vessels used was 63. A large number of the vessels made more than one trip. Twenty vessels took produce for West ot England ports, compared with 22 vessels for the previous year. Final Sailings, From ? 1931 ’ Auckland 42 Gisborne ...1........ 1 > ■ Napier .....I 3 New Plymouth 1 Wellington 49 Lyttelton 2 Dunedin and Port Chalmers 4 Bluff 2 ■ ' "104- , The addition of the three latest vessels to the fleet ot the New Zealand Shipping Company records a distinct improvement. They are of a speedy type and are fitted out according to the most up-to-date conditions for the safe carriage of refrigerated or chilled cargo. The Commonwealth and Dominion Line has made provision, for additional space tor refrigerated cargo in a-number of-their vessels, by the insulation ot further holds.' The Shaw, Savill and Albion Company, by the installation ot larger fans giving better circulation of air, has also improved transport conditions in a number of its Ships. : >■ THE TtANGITANE.
